Description
Full Title: The Mermaid Faery and The Inquisitive FrogWatercolour on Cotman watercolour paper.
When I asked my beautiful friend Kelly if she would model for me, she told me that she had always dreamt of being turned into a mermaid faery, which instantly inspired me. I did some sketches and took some photos of her for reference. I also know that she is a huge fan of frogs, hence the giant curious frog.
I painted this today and it has taken me quite a few hours. As always, painting makes me feel like all my stress is evaporating with every brushtstroke. Wonderfully therapeutic indeed.
I can't wait to show Kelly and see what she thinks

There's something about this, it's fantastic.
A change in style from a lot of your other work, this one seems much softer.

Cheers Matt. Yeah I see what you mean, it is much softer than my other fantasy pieces. Also, I never really put backgrounds in my images because I'm too laz, I like painting or drawing the focal point and then I get bored! With this the background was a fundamental part of the painting so I had to do it. It was really quite a challenge but i enjoyed it a lot

Yes but not for a while and never for fantasy art only ever for abstraction. When I was at uni I did a big portfolio of portraiture pieces because I love traditional portraiture just in pencil. The point of the project was for me to see how I could stretch myself and take a subject matter I loved and produce something new with it. So I got my mum and quite a few of my friends to sit and pose for me individually. I would try and take their character and symbolise it on the page through colour, texture etc, whilst having a loosely translated portrait of them. That was really good fun.
This was different though because it was nice taking an element of something I know she loves and putting it into the fantasy context.

Argh! Lesson planning! That's the trouble with teaching; Although you're not at school long you have to bring the work home. Kids don't know how easy they get it.
