Raven
-Prompt 8
In legends, the raven is sometimes rumored to have oracular sight. Depict your tokota in the midst of a vision, and/or seeing it unfold at a later time.
-Setting
Ridge of the Elders
Desolate silence. Frozen ground. Ominous trees. Snow as far as the eye could see and lights in the sky that painted everything blue and green.. The cold was like knives to the joints as they ascended the ridge.
Corvus shivered as a gust of wind swept by the cliff face. The crow perching on his back didn’t seem affected by the chill. It was still looking forward with its eyes fixed on something only they could see it seemed. The tokota could only perceive the long shadows created by the aurora above them. They formed into unnatural shapes, dancing over the snow. It felt as if a pack of spirits was surrounding them in this sacred place.
“Aippaq, hear my prayer and know, I humbly seek your guidance.” Corvus recited.
The skies remained the same. The old male cursed and shivered.
It had taken Corvus more than a decade to embark on this journey. He was no spring chicken and his travels had taken a toll on him. But he was so close now. He only wanted the spirits’ blessing. He had never been overly bothered by the mockery he received thanks to his gift. He was a Seer, he was gifted with visions and the ability to interact with spirits. Many did not believe him, but he had been used to it.
His daughter however, was not. She shared the same gift but was less apt at ignoring the barbs and jests directed at her from all sides. His other pups also suffered albeit indirectly. Corvus knew the other tokotas poked fun at them because of their father’s odd habits and seemingly crazy ramblings. He had never sought validation for himself, but if it would help his children be more accepted, he would do this. He would have Aippaq himself give him his blessing and come back home with his tail held high and approval from his totem spirit. That way others will see he was to be taken seriously, that he had what it took to be not only a useful member of the pack but a competent and trustworthy leader.
The crow on his shoulder cawed and took flight. It started to circle above him and made him look up. Corvus gasped. The lights had become impossibly brighter, coloring the snow covered rocks in blues and greens. Shapes were dancing in the wisps. There were wolves, deer, bears, tokotas and a myriad of other animals. They rushed past him, the brightness making him close his eyes. When he opened them he saw the shapes coalescing into a giant mass hovering in the sky close to the cliff he stood on.
The large shape floated in the air as if it was walking on invisible ground. It moved until it stood before him. The form was that of a giant tokota with blazing eyes. They stared at one another for what seemed like an eternity. Corvus’s heart pounded in his chest and the crow was strangely silent as if waiting for something to happen. Finally it did. A sudden movement and the tokota before him threw its head back and howled so loud the sound was felt rather than heard across the land. When its head came back down its eyes were two glowing orbs of blue and surrounding it were tendrils of light that started to expand and surround Corvus.
The old tokota stood very still while the light enveloped him. He felt a vitality he hadn’t felt since he was a pup and great warmth that chased away the cold of the snow covered cliff they were on. He felt the being look into his blue eyes and hold his stare. Corvus’s eyes started glowing too and he saw one of the clearest visions he ever had. He saw his children guiding others in spiritual journeys, he saw old friends return and he saw his mate standing proud before him as she stared at a much larger pack and guided them as she had for years.
The vision faded as quickly as it appeared and with it the spirit of Aippaq which had granted him his wish once and for all.
