Description Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

Stonehenge Paper - about 12 hrs

Not happy with the white beard hair at all. Tried the stylus which has worked well for me in the past, but not this time! different paper maybe?
Any suggestions? I've hunted all over for white hair technique & nothing has helped!

Hi Roland - this one was done on Stonehenge which is a vellum - generally I prefer smooth (Strathmore bristol 300 series is my current fave but I'm always experimenting) For a vellum this is great though - its very thick & not TOO rough

This is a lovely drawing

I know what you mean about the white hairs!!

This is what I do ... hope it helps

I use a nail or a screwdriver or anything with a very sharp point, and then I indent (not sure if that's a word?) the paper where I want the little white hairs to be.
Then, when you shade over it, the little indentations are left white.
It's probably cheating, but oh well

Hi Angela - Thanks for the advice! yeah I have tried that before with an inkless pen but didn't work quite right here - not to worry...
I checked out your galley & it's awesome - In fact I'm sure I've seen it before so I don't know why I wasn't watching you already.... but now I am! Thanks for the watch too

Reeally cool Dr Jones!
I have an idea for the hairs...
Do you remember typewriter erasers? They are like pencils only with eraser stuff in the middle. Well those little puppies can be sharpened like a pencil. I don't know the size of this but it just might work out for you. Now the erasers are rare but still around, and I but them by the box when I find them. Another assistant in my bag of tricks is an eraser shield. It is utilized by old drafters who can still draw a plan with a pencil and a triangle. They are made out of aluminum and stainless steel. They have cutouts in them to minimize the erasering.
I hope these tidbits are useful, but by the looks of your skill set....You probably already have this stuff.
Cheers and keep up the beautiful work!

Awww thanks Wayne, I have heard of those typewriter erasers being really useful cos they're so hard right? Of course, they are....ahem....way before my time...lol

Yeah, they are pretty tough, but the thing I like is the sharp point you can get. It gives me more control and allows me to 'un'-draw a fine line. If the graphite isn't to heavy you can get back to the white paper. Highlights of the hairy type become easier to manage. ...sounds like a shampoo add...

OMG you even got some of the pores in his face..crazy good, and of course his scar. I read where one guy used a sewing needle and scraped the paper where the white hairs are to be on the chin so graphite would stay out of them but never wanted to risk it. I think you did good..

Yeah I've done that before with a pen without ink it works really well (see my Woody Allen) I tried it here but I don't know... didn't really work properly on this one. It is a bit scary when you first try it though! Awww thanks
