in 1988, Indochina are heated between South & North Vietnam, and in 1987, North Vietnam Anniversary show its Capability from air to land, the main star in the show are the Mikoyan MiG-29 Fighter, which create a massive threat to the south, because of this, South Vietnamese request a fighter from the US, Mostly the F-16A/B, Vietnam requested Two Squadron(28 Units), but the request are snub because the US congress & Senate are in feared of starting an arms race in Indochina, but they offer to transfer 2 Frigate as a replacement of F-16 Alongside free F-5E, South Vietnam wanted to modify the ship to have a credible air defense against any threat, still, they accept the ship with dissatisfaction.

the First ship enter service in 1991, Naming it Tran Quang Khai FFG 12, And the second one are named Tran Hung Dao FFG 13, they serve as the Mainstay frigate of the SVN from 1993 to 2006 after their Upgrade.

the upgrade happen from 2003 to 2007, the ship is fitted with newer weapons, and the Anti Air Capability are also beefed up, newer radar.

mostly the major upgrade is adding 16 VLS Mk 48 Mod 1, 1x MiM 72 Chaparral, the ship's main gun is replaced with Mk 45 gun

They are deployed in south west of Vietnam, in Gulf of Thailand and Strait Malacca.

the ship is supplemented year later on with 4 Brooke Class in 1996, and 3 Oliver Hazard Perry Class in 2012.
