This is me and my girlfriend cosplaying as the Almighty tallest Red (me) and Almighty tallest Purple (my girlfriend) at Anime Iowa 2009.It took about a week to finish the costume and 2 of those days were all nighters.
The heads are made of craft foam with plastic eyes collored with sharpie. and the antenna have cardboard in them to keep their shape.
The chest plates are made from football armor that was pretty much destroyed to get them a little bit smaller and the right shape, then covered with craft foam. The bumped up shoulder pieces and the backpacks and the arm guards are made from insulating foam and covered with craft foam as well. The fingers (that were made the day of the convention) are made from coat hangers and a plastic green tube found at Ax-Man.
The under garments (the body and arms) were sown by my grilfriend from scratch, as well as the skirts. The skirt at the top and bottom are also lined with craft foam.

my friend and I are going to AnimeBoston in April, and we wanted to go as the Tallest! Any tips for some rookie cosplayers?

Sure thing. I'd have to say that the craft foam was probably the thing that made it look the most cartoony and is also pretty easy to work with and light weight. Simple hot glue and duct tape hold it together pretty well. To get the heads to be the right proportion we had about 6 inches of stuffing (like stuff animal stuffing) so that we could look out the eyes. The red eyes are cut from some $1 piggy banks that were already see through, the purple eyes were cut from something we picked up at AxMan (a find anything and everything store) and used purple sharpie to color them since they were clear, and that worked really well. As I mentioned in the description the bodies were made from kids football armor (found at a thrift store) and we just hot glued/duck-taped the craft foam to it. The arm/hands and the two bumps around the head were made from this pink foam, i think it's used as insulation in housing (not bead foam), and we just cut away at it (it was probably the most annoying part) and put craft foam around them. The fingers were made only because of luck, we made them out of coat hangers, then found some green tubing from AxMan and just stuck the hangers through them. I guess you could do the hanger thing and spray paint them as well.
This outfit probably took a good month between the two of us to make, and that was a month before the convention so we were pretty stressed out when trying to make it. So try and start early as possible.
As for general advice, this is probably one of the most difficult outfits i've made, but if you're good with your hands and can find uses of random objects you find then go for it. Cardboard, hot glue and duck-tape are your friend for making outrageous outfits (we used quite a bit of cardboard to make the craft foam stiffer, but is also good for building off of).

Though, you know, now that I thibk of it, I don't believe I've seen any other Tallest costumes made! huh.
Anyhow, these are extremely well-done, and the foot-ball gear idea was just ingenious, as were the fingers. XD
