Description
'We're prepared to offer a full ton of superlative-grade frumpstiggle ...' the muck-a-muck said enticingly.
'A full TON?' The Enens were aghast. Then recovering: 'True the Earthman HAS taught us practically all he knows. We could probably get along without him now...'
'Now wait a minute!' Dillingham shouted. But the bargaining continued unabated.
After all - what was the value of a man, compared to that of frumpstiggle?
The next book I read was 'Prostho Plus' (1971) by Piers Anthony. Apparently he's fairly well known for something called the "Xanth" series. I found this book by browsing through a funny page on Tumblr called "Kindle Cover Disasters". Most of the stuff they post are funny, bad photoshop jobs, but once in a while they'll accidentally post something that's good albeit weird... like the cover for Prostho Plus. When I saw it was about a prosthodontist who gets kidnapped and is forced to fix alien teeth, I was all in. And then I found it at a used bookstore soon afterward.
And what a hilarious, surprising little romp it was! It's especially good because the main character is 40 year old Dr. Dillingham who's bored with his job and frustrated by his patients who just won't take care of their teeth. And lo and behold when he gets kidnapped... it turns out the whole galaxy is full of idiots who don't brush! Even though he finds new frustrations, he also finds rejuvenation for the love of his field of care.
Thoroughly recommended for everyone! And if you're in a health field of any sort, this is an especially good buy for you.

your synopsis is so wonderful that i want to find this book now!! and your cover conveys everything so perfectly- this guy is a dentist, he's middle-aged, he's very apprehensive but still getting right into the mouth of an alien who is way bigger than he is. excellent work!

I've never heard of this one - neither book, nor author - but by the way you describe, it looks like a must-read.

It was a wonderful surprise. I mean, how many books are there about dentists/prosthodontists, anyway? Let alone in a quirky scifi adventure.Β

Indeed. It sounds like the book doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's great! Wonky, lighthearted sci-fi is lacking out there.

I'm in the mood for more light reading after all the drama I've read lately. Maybe I'll pick up the first Xanth and see what I think. I wouldn't read ALL of them of course, but I like his writing for sure.Β
