I am so pleased to see a lot of work, I'm glad that you post stuff too β₯
The detail of the scales, and the focus on the face is so cool, and very well done
and the wing-hand in the background is amazing

I have no words to describe my amazement, as a very amateur painter your painting skills are nothing short of godly, your edge variation is so good and I wouldn't even in my wildest dreams could have thought up of. Textures are just flawless, its like I'm looking at a movie still. So many things I could comment on, but your skills are too much for my feeble writing skills to describe. I have no idea how painting this way is possible. This is just so good.Β

I must say I'm quite amazed you can make a creature look so tangible. It's as if you can really feel the leathery texture on its skin/scales and mane, and hear a voice from its mouth. The more I look at this the more I feel it's either gonna turn and look at me or fly off. You are so good with eyes too. So is this one a male or fem (or neither lol)? Also where do you draw inspiration for this?

dschunai In reply to SwaffyX [2016-07-30 08:23:28 +0000 UTC]
Aww, thank you so much! ^__^
I'd say that this is a male dragon - I like the idea that they could use that cheek-fan-thingy for mating display or to intimidate rivals. But it could be also a female one and the size of the fan-thingy is much larger and prominent on males.
My inspiration for this came from a very ugly dragon sketch that I did for the purpose of practicing gray scales/values (that was in 2013 - here's the first version that I drew over the sketch: dschunai.deviantart.com/art/d-β¦ ), and then I decided this week that I should finish it - and here it is! c:

Well you definitely turned an old sketch into something really detailed and "up to par" with your new art as I would guess it. I saw your step by step too, seems you reworked a lot of it - well I think it was worth the attention. Also I get what you say about the head frills, to be used to display power/dominance or mating, I'm sure they help with heat insulation too.

your art is so life like, i always feel like i can reach out and touch it,,
if you don't mind me asking, (and i'm sorry if this has been answered before) but it appears you have some kinda blur/filter on your work that gives in motion and focus in certain areas, if that's the case may i ask what filters are used?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
dschunai In reply to SimplyMisty [2016-07-29 21:15:47 +0000 UTC]
Aw, sure! c:
For this I used motion blur / gaussian blur on the wings and part of the neck and outer edges of the silhouette. Then a sharpen filter in some areas and a channel adjustment for the final touch.
If you've any more questions feel free to ask - I'm always happy to help! :>

I already had people ask for prints, but I don't really know where I should offer them. I'm also no freelancer and I probably would get in trouble if I earn money without paying taxes! :P Thanks for asking though - I hope that I'll offer prints in the near future! Thanks for the interest! C:
