Description 30 years ago anime was changed by this series. A new concept of the “real robot” where mecha were only a tool that was used by humans instead of the traditional anime of the era where the “Super robot” was the norm . This was all together a new concept in general. So being out of the norm for the time the series was met with luke warm ratings with it’s debut in Japan , which is hard to think about now that the series is an icon of anime in Japan and America. As we all know over time that changed, and introduced audiences to a concept that people would want more of for years to come.

Series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino creates a vivid world of fascinating mecha designs and settings that paint the picture of a future where technology ranging from the new invention of Mobile Suits, to immense colonies where millions of people live their lives in space and are even born in space, is now the fulcrum in human affairs. While these are great sci fi additions to the genera, I will always remember the human element that the series brought to anime. The sense that no matter how many technological feats the human race accomplished, there were always going to be human problems to go along with them. There will always be war, and it will always be brutal.

There are no punches pulled as prominent characters in the series on both sides of the conflict meet their death as this war rages on. There is also a strong focus of civilians who are trapped in the war, especially the young who have lost their parents to the war, so in many respects there are lots of anti- war themes. At the same time the main character Amuro Ray who eventually becomes the pilot for the Mobile suit Gundam embodies complex themes of the series as well. As a young boy he is thrust into a position of responsibility for his friends and shipmates in that he is the only person with the aptitude to use the Gundam beyond it’s full potential. So much to the point that he becomes a symbol of fear and an obsession for the antagonist Char Azneble.

As Amuro is just barely coming into adult hood his struggles come from the fear of a huge responsibility of protecting and entire ship full of people. A huge responsibility that most adults wouldn’t even want. There is also the notion that when one becomes grown their talents might be used for destructive and violent purposes which do not reflect the persons true nature, nor necessarily the true potential of one‘s talent. The time he lives in reflect how he must use this gift. He has no choice as he must fight or die along with his comrades. If war is an eventuality then one must fight if they whether one wants to or not out of necessity for their friends, family, and themselves, even if you have no stake in the wars eventual geo political (and space ) outcome.

These are only a fraction of the complex themes this wonderful series brings to the front in this great work of sci fi. I have been a huge fan of the series since I discovered it in the early 90’s when I was desperate to find the old anime series I used to watch as a kid. Every year I find something new and different that I haven’t seen before in Gundam. I had no idea that me and the Gundam were turning 30 on the same year so I had to do a tribute painting. For all you have given me thank you Gundam and happy 30th anniversary!!!

Wow! I will have to say that this is the best write up I have ever seen on anything.

First, the art; excellently captured, superbly detailed - even down to the hydralics. The scale is excellent too.

As for the write up, I have never read such a clear, powerful, moving account of a series let alone about responsibility; I was in awe reading this because all you have said is true; war is part of us; we fight for what we want - be it for selfish reasons or noble deeds.

Then there is the strong statement of Amuro Rey - a young lad who has the responsibilities thrusted on him because there is no choice; its either walk and let his friends die, or fight and become something awful.

There are those who moan about war, about fighting and yes it is a disgusting element. Alas there are some disgusting people out there: the patriot, the zealot, the dillusional.

Well done sir - this has made me think a lot

Oh and right about the excellence of this series.

I'm really glad you read that! It's one of my favorite paintings, but I'm really happy when people read my thoughts on the series and share their thoughts on the series as well. Cheers man!

No, thank you and cheers for making me think on this too - when someone writes something that makes me think, and moves, its worth noting.

Thanks sir

Great picture. Love the original mobile suit gundam. Oddly enough i never really liked the whole "real robot" genre. I always preferred the over exaggerated-ness of the super robot shows, which is why i love Mobile suit gundam, it's the perfect blend of both genres. The future series are questionable, but this series and the original macross are some of my very favorite animes from this period. Anyway, great detail and great coloring, loved the water color-esque muted tones, they work very well.

Thank you much! I’m glad you like the work. I hear what your saying and the super robot genre will always have a special place in my heart as well. How could anyone not like Giant Robo?! And I agree with ya on the Macross and Gundam for sure being the fantastic, as I am not a huge fan of the later incarnations of both series. The only two that get a pass for me are Macross Plus and Turn A Gundam. Someday I will get around to making my homage fan art paintings of those so keep an eye out for em.

The Gundam. Most revolutionary robot/mecha design in the last 30 years. Hasn't lost it's charm flavor after so long.

Very, very well painted, Don! Your understanding of lighting on matte and metallic surfaces is excellent. And of course, this is THE Gundam that started it all...

Fave'd.

Yep that is is! Still one of my fav designs as well. Had to paint it up. I glad you notice the details as well. Hopefully soon I can get my photographer friend (hopefully he will work cheap! LOL) to take some better pics of my paintngs. The larger ones like this won't fit on the scanner and I don't have photoshop to scan in a piece at a time and paste it together. Anyhow I'm glad you like that one for sure

Yeah it's too big for my scanner and I don't have photoshop to scan it in a piece at a time and then put it together. I have an little Nikon cool pix, and it is a great little camera, but not for this kind of thing and I'm not a photographer.
Hopefully I will soon have a good friend who is an photographer take pics of my works so I can repost them on here.

great job. It's incredible to think about the depth and complexity that the original Gundam has brought to the table. I have a hard time convincing people that this series has the same influence in Japan that Star Wars has in the States.

Thank you much, this is one of my favs. I'm a huge Gundam fan. I used to love the orginal series over all the others, but I just found Gundam Zeta and that might be my fav of them all now. Course Char's Counter Attack will always have a special place in my heart! LOL

Thanks! Glad you like it! I was a big fan of the original series and "Char's Counter Attack", but a couple of months ago I found Gundam Zeta which takes place in the time frame in between these events in the Gundam universe, and it is pretty much my fav now...So mabey I'll to some fan art of the Gundam Zeta for the 31'st.

Turn A is awesome for sure! It took me forever to find it but I have it now. I have to do a painting of it some time here in the future, but yeah for sure catch Zeta and Char's Counterattack, cause those are fantastic.
