Of all the art I've been looking at today this is by far my favorite. I really like artsy art and art for it's own sake. Here I am referring to the abstractness. I like the use of shapes as symbols in themselves, and I like the glowing old sci-fi movie colors for the cubes very much.

well i think that it still turned out really well. i like the teal blue speckling. kinda looks like it's supposed to be some kind of face shield or a visor. but you really did a great job at drawing attention to the eyes, the left in particular.

Hmm, a cup of a tea.

I have to agree with a previous comment, I love your use of teal in your works. Also, the added texture/ static over the face. I can't stop staring at his nose. His ear seems a tad too big/ stick out, but then again I have freakishly small ears so I am a horrible judge of that. It feels more tranquil than your other works to me.

Ahh, small world. Am winking towards IADT, though in my case for one of their business/ humanities courses

Du1l In reply to clennie [2011-01-18 17:47:01 +0000 UTC]

Teal ftw, its my not-so-secret secret ingredient.

Well I think the ear is in proportion, although it could go a little higher, and the light is fairly unrealistic , but I happened to start studying the ear around this time so I was keen to paint it in with a bit of emphasis. Thanks for the feedback tho clen .

Ee gads, will have to visit IADT sometime next year if many more folks from dA keep going there. Good luck with it!

You're most welcome.

Tell me, do you know if the storyboards for Animation in Dun Laoghaire can be done digitally?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Du1l In reply to kulka [2011-01-11 18:14:09 +0000 UTC]

Think so kulk, Although if they're still doing things the way they were there's very little digital painting going on in the course work, its mostly traditional blue pencil stuff. And Keith (the animation principals lecturer) does the portfolio assessments with one of the life drawing teachers, so they might look on traditional work a little easier. if thats why you're asking?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kulka In reply to Du1l [2011-01-11 21:05:31 +0000 UTC]

That's precisely what I'm asking. Was just wondering if there's any way I can make my life easier like that. Seems Ballyfermot is all about traditional as well. Ah well, sniff sniff, one day they shall see the light. Oh, I was also wondering, have you got any idea if Visual Communications has any illustrative work or if it's just designy business going on?

Yep, I'm in a portfolio frenzy, deadlines are slowly approaching. (Or not so slowly as with the matter of NCAD.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Du1l In reply to kulka [2011-01-11 21:39:19 +0000 UTC]

Ah wellsy, Having also briefly attended NCAD for some painting goodness I can probably advisably a littly.

IADT isnt all traditional at all, just very little digital painting taught, if any at all.. You'll have plenty of 3d, after effects, flash, stuff like that which I skipped in order to have a fantastic time instead.

But they also do a lot of critical writing and thesis'ing which I don't think ballyfermot do. If you actually want to learn how to animate and not script produce and critcally evaluate your own film go with ballyfermot.

If you're going to do fine art/viscomm.. oih well, I doubt you'll find much difference between IADT and NCAD, 80% of the class will be doing mindless acts of 'art' such as gluing themselves to a dog, eating an armchair over the course of a month or throwing slices of bread at other students every day for a month (that last one happened during my time in IADT), and 15% of people will be doing terrible design abstract something something, so basically you'll need to just filter out all the BS you'll be taught and focus on being the 5% who focuses on the sparse gems of wisdom and few teachers who will teach actual proper drawing/painting foundations.

1 thing I will say, NCAD probably have (used to have?) a greater percentage of hipster artists who dress like picaso paintings but cant paint or draw jack all. Which I found quite irritating, but you may not.

Wow this is a big reply, hopefully it depressed you, because art college in ireland is bloody depressing. Whatever you end up doing, have a good time (in moderation), and just self teach yourself on the side as much as you can.

Do not waste 4 years partying and progress in nothing til you leave. Like me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kulka In reply to Du1l [2011-01-11 21:55:26 +0000 UTC]

That it's depressing, I kinda see already, but I'm not sure it would be smart to just depend purely on self education. I don't quite trust myself that much. Although I completely agree, that even in my portfolio course, the amount of stuff I find redundant is insane. All that precious time that could be spent on useful studies. Ah well.

I'm not mad into going to NCAD, only course I'd consider there is Vis Comm and I heard it's not that great over there. We're still working with their brief for the portfolio though. So once that's done in a few weeks (if it does, ha) I can maybe push a few pieces that I'd actually like.

All I know is that I want to do a course that teaches me something practical, instead of honing the bread-hurling skills (seriously, wtf).

Just gimme a digital painting course and I'm a happy girl.

Du1l In reply to kulka [2011-01-11 22:18:49 +0000 UTC]

Give me a decent illustration course and I'll go back to college 2moro!

But I didn't mean to suggest skipping college and studying on your own, I suggest self study alongside college, if you find stuff you're interested in you can ask lecturers if they can show you stuff like it etc, and when others are stuck doing the redundant crap (and I'm afraid there is TONS) you'll still be progressing. Also, going to college (more than anything learning based) is an experience not to be missed, Good times await kulka, give me a shout if there are any awesome parties going on

kulka In reply to Du1l [2011-01-11 23:07:08 +0000 UTC]

Ha! Well, I've been to college already, back in Poland. Got an English degree out of that. But I decided it was time to reinvent myself.

As for the partying, so far I can only offer some unrelated to college. My group has a real trouble getting together, I'm afraid and they seem on a slightly different buzz. That's not how we partied in 1999. Haha.

Du1l In reply to kulka [2011-01-13 00:31:57 +0000 UTC]

No college parties?? Awh cripes, there goes my re-living my college days vicariously through you =d

That's something about IADT actually, great house parties, good pub near by, but going out in town with your class is highly unlikely, and dunlaoghaire town is sort of crappy.

Other than that I dunno, I'l be sure to let you know of any other info I remember to help you decide where to apply anyway

kulka In reply to Du1l [2011-01-13 11:16:07 +0000 UTC]

Tick tock, time's running out. Gotta fill out the CAO application this month. :/

We got as far as to the local pub, no house parties really. But I guess that's because the group is full of 18 year olds living with their parents, that makes it kinda hard to throw on a proper session.

Oo er, I dunno, frankly I didn't enjoy either ncad or iadt. So maybe you should go for Ballyfermot. Review it for me, and I can save up for a course there if its any good.
