Description A popular, jovial Tanith trooper, one of those original members who form the 'backbone' of the Tanith.

Varl lost his shoulder and most of his upper arm on Fortis Binary, and received a bulky but powerful augmetic replacement. Varl is quite accomplished with his blade, amazing his comrades in the barracks with his slight-of-hand tricks and knife-throwing.

He accompanied Gaunt to Gereon. When extraction was impossible, he joined the resistance, training them in working as fireteams along with Serg. Tona Criid. He has proved his loyalty time and time again to Gaunt and the Ghosts.

He is known as one of the more approachable and affable officers of the regiment having worked his way up from the ranks.

Character created by Dan Abnett for Games Workshop.

Varl is one of my favorite Ghosts hands down second only to Larkin.

Not to pick too much on a really good piece of art, but there are a few things off.
Like his eyes; they dont seem to be looking in the same direction.
And that finger sticking out on his hand, it looks like its placed a bit wrong.

But as I said, awesome artwork.

Oh, and I discovered this while reading Gaunts Ghosts ^.^

Looking at it now, you're right about the eyes. The finger on his right hand is supposed to be somewhat unnatural, moving because of the adjustments he's making to his bionic forearm. Of course, they say if you have to explain your artwork, it's failed

ah. That makes sense. I just meant it sorta looked a bit like an out-of-place thumb.

But, as I said, besides those two small things, its an awesome piece of art.

Yeah know i always thought he had a mechanical arm rather then just simply a shoulder replacement. Also, how do you lose your shoulder and most of your upper arm without losing your entire limb in the process?

nevertheless, that's what happened. When the augmetics failed in one of the books, the tissues of his arm started to die. I guess his arm wasn't blown clean off, but rather the shoulder so severely damaged that it had to be replaced. Also if you look carefully, there are significant augmetic elements to his forearm, as well.

Fuck yeah, favorite Tanith, and by far your best work on a Ghost so far.

Arm should have been more robotic-looking, IMO, but it's still damned good.

my favourite of all ghosts, excellent work, but im sorry man, i know i always have something to bug about but i cant help it, Varl lost his shoulder then his arm, and from what you've depicted it looks like he lost most of it, unless thats supposed to be prefabricated flesh but the imperium does not have that technology, still an epic drawing of an epic character though

you are one for the specific, detailed criticism! Well it's all good. As I understand it, the buld-round fragments caught him in the shoulder and damn near severed his arm, but the arm itself was pretty much unscathed. Once the medicea's had installed a prosthetic shoulder, they could reattach the arm to it, with proper augmetic support.

aye that is true, but on (i cant remember the name of the planet) where they effectively reenacted the D-day landings, salt water got into the mechanical joint which was casuing him severe pain, so in an act of mercy Domor and Caffran deactivated it but it also meant his arm would die if the shoulder wasnt repaired in time, which it wasnt, which is how he lost his entire arm
