Chapter 2

Mumbling Garrett woke up the next night, right after sunset, because something had picked around on his ear and woke him up that way. He rolled on his side and faced Bassos female Bird Jenivere. She sat on his bed and looked at him with her black marble eyes, leaning the head to the left and to the right.
The thief sighed and sat up. When Jenivere was here, he must be late. She came to him every night, but normally he was already awake when she came. So was she too early or he too late? A look out of the window shows him that she was earlier than normal. Garrett yawned loud and stretched himself before he stood up. His head and back felt so much better now after that unwanted fall last night and he started to dress up, all watched by the magpie lady.
As he was dressed up she sat down on his shoulder.
“What is it?” Garrett asked with a lil smile and stroke over her shiny plumage, while she softly picked his ear again.
A while she let him carry her around in the clocktower, before she flew out of the window again in the night and Garrett walked to the tall window and looked out. It was dark now so he left his place to visit Basso and get some work from him.

While he walked over to the Fences Place he listen to what the citywatch has to say, but it wasn’t so interessting this night. No news and even the lying around newspapers didn’t told him anything new, so he jumped carefully from his higher place and moved in the shadows to the crippled Burrick.
In his room, Basso was working on something in a darker corner, not noticing the thief, who climbed in through the window again.
“Basso?”
“What the…OUCH!!” The man stood up and rubbed his head.
“Garrett, why can’t you stop sneaking around here!?”
“You know me, thats the best I can do. Wanted to ask if you have anything to do for me.” Garrett said and saw how Basso grabbed a piece of paper from his table and put it in the backocket of his pants.
“Sorry no, no work tonight for you.” He said and Garrett nodded a bit.
“I see…by the way, what are you doing there? Cleaning up?”
“Yeah a bit, you see I need more space for all that stuff.” Basso said and Garrett came closer, acting like he would be interessted but stealing only the paper from Basso without his notice about it.
“A bit of that stuff here has to leave, so I can’t need you here Garrett, look around in the city for jobs, I tell you when I have something for you.”
“Alright…” Garrett left his place and moved in the pub. He sat down in a dark corner and looked at the paper he just stole and read it.
He frowned. Why didn’t Basso told him about this mission?
Down at the docks was a ship with a very valuable load on it. A box with big rare pearls right from the other continent. That sounded interessting and at such ships was a lot more loot than he actuall needed. So much loot actually that Garrett could Stopp working for two months!
So this would be a good job for him this night, even when Basso didn’t wanted him to find out about it.

To reach the docks wasn’t difficult, the roofs were perfectly to hide there and Garrett could walk over them unseen.
As he saw the one ship he climbed down and walked closer really carefully. All lamps were turned off, not a single guard was to see, what made the situation a bit strange for the masterthief.
He looked around but there was really nobody and he had the strange feeling of being watched, or was he just a bit paranoid?
He ignored that feeling and walked on the ship, which was also left completely.
A leader lead down to the storeroom which was full with different kind of boxes and Garrett started to look for the one with the pearls in.
Soon he found a smaller blue box and opened it and his eyes widened. The box was empty. How could that be? Was it the wrong box or was this a trap?
He looked around the other boxes but there was nothing valuable left as he head somebody running over the deck.
Fast the thief run upstairs too and saw in the distance a person climbing on the roof of a house.
The person stopped there a moment. He or she was wearing a long cloak with hood which was flying a bit in the wind and against the moonlight Garrett could see a big sack over the persons shoulder, probably filled with the loot from the ship.
The person turned around and run away fast.
“God damnit that can’t be!“ Garrett growled and followed, because he wanted all that gold for himself.

The stranger was carrying a lot of stuff but could run really fast, even with that big bag over his shoulder. He was jumping randomly from one roof to the other, in hope to get rid of Garrett but the masterthief didn’t let him get away with all that gold.
As he realised that, he stopped directly and Garrett did the same, hiding in a shadow and watched the person.
He couldn’t see him well, but saw that it was a young man, a bit smaller than he was.
“Why are you hiding? Don’t you wanna steal my loot mastherthief Garrett?” the man said and Garrett realised he was young, nearly a boy.
“No need to linger in the shadows Garrett, I can see you very very good over there.” He said and Garrett was sure he was trying to fool him, so he changed to another shadow but realised how the boys look followed him. Catlike eyes were shining in the moonlight under the hood and were fixed on him. Could he really see him?
„Come out! I though you wanted this?“ he was pointing with his free hand to his bag and Garrett really left the shadows to face the stranger. Really carefully he came closer and pulled out a dagger, hiding it under his own cloak.
Because the moon was behind that young man, Garrett couldn’t see much of him, only his eyes were shining through the dark, both fixed on him.
“So you are the infamous Garrett? Strange, I expected someone…taller.“ the boy checked him while Garrett was just looking at the bag over his shoulder.
Carefully he stepped closer, but fast the boy pulled out a dagger and hold it in the masterthiefs way.
“No funny bussiness!” He said loud, holding the blade tight.
“I know how to work with this, you will not steal this. Its mine, I don’t let anyone get it, not even you, masterthief!”
He turned around and run away, but this time Garrett didn’t followed him.
He knew where the boy would run, directly to Basso.

As Garrett reached Bassos place, the fence was putting something in his save.
“Hello Basso.” Garrett said in a bad mood and leaned against the table.
“Oh hello Garrett….what is it?”
“What can you tell me about a young thief with yellow cateyes?!”
Basso bit on his lips and looked for the paper in his pockets but of course it wasn’t there.
“Are you looking for this?” Garrett asked, holding the piece of paper between his right Index- and middlefinger.
His fence sighed loud and took it away.
“So you met each other?“
“Yeah. Who is that?!”
“He didn’t told me alot. He said his name is Daniel and that he is new in the city, he was looking for a job and so…”
“So you let him do my work?”
“I had no idea that he would really manage to do the job right. I thought he got caught and I never see him again.”
“But he was successful Basso!”
“Yeah I see. Seems you got a rival here Garrett.“ the fence said and saw Garretts pissed face.
“Hey, calm down, he will not get any work from me anymore.”
“Better is…for you!” Garrett growled and left the place.

The next nights run by and Garrett realised one thing: he HATED that boy.
So often Daniel managed to get into the same place as the masterthief and ruined the mission for both of them, even when Garrett didn’t know if the boy wanted it that way or not.
Was this city really that small that two thieves could step into each others works so often?
Really annoyed Garrett was on his way to his next mission, his bow in hands. If he would see the boy, he was sure, he would kill him directly! It wasn’t the thiefs wish to be a killer, but the boy was so annoying for him and it always turned out to be pretty dangerous when he was in the near. This night he should steal an importand document from the citys Library. A job that could had better things to do than wasting their time between old books in an old building. The rich people in the city liked to read but they did it at home, the keepers, who loved their books were gone since years, same as the hammerites and the pagans.
Garrett knew that the last Pagans left the city years ago as the last forests around the city got destroyed. They were searching for their green luck far away. What happened to the hammerites the thief didn’t knew but he wasn’t interessted in knowing that. One problem less to deal with.
He walked around the building and found an open window at the second floor. Perfect way to get in. He pulled out a ropearrow and shoot it on a plank next to the window and climbed up the rope.
Inside it was dark and it smelled like old leather and books.
He had to be carefull, his footsteps echoed loud in this big hall and he knew what he was searching was at the first floor.
So carefully he managed to get one stairway down, send one guard to dreamland and found the room with the importand documents. What this documents were about he didn’t knew.
He reached his hands out for the documents as suddenly the lights in the room turned on. Startled the thief grabbed what he needed and looked around. Was this a trap?
It seems so, many guards run into the room.
/Oh shit…/ Garrett thought as he was surrounded. Not a single guard moved, all their crossbows were pointed at him, as a last person stepped into this room.
“Well well, if that isn’t our so called masterthief?!” the man said with a bad laugher in his voice. A voice Garrett hated more than anyone elses voice. It was the Thief taker general, who was facing him now, with an evil smile on his face.
“This time we got you Garrett, no way for you to escape this time.”
The thief swallowed hard and thought about a way to escape from that bad situation as suddenly all lights turned off again and the room was pitch black.
“What the…WHO PUT OUT THE LIGHTS?!” The general yelled and that was a signal for Garrett to run like hell.
He tackled down two guards and the general himself, before running up the stairs again. He reached the big hall of books, ran to the open window, jumped and managed to grab the rope and slide down on it, to escape in the cities Shadows, with one question in his mind: Who turned off the lights?
