Description EqD Article: www.equestriadaily.com/2012/02…

Basic statistical analysis of the screentimes of the Mane 6 + Spike.

EDIT: Found a singular error in the first episode (Twilight has now 30 seconds less of screentime).

S1 & S2 & S3 analysis: fav.me/d5kzo28

If you want to help by giving sugessions for my next analysis: fav.me/d4qteis

On average, I analyzed an episode a day (and each took me 2-3 hours).
Tons of paper were wasted on this, but I am satisfied with the results.

Margin of error:
Since the timers of the video players I used show only full seconds, I had to guess how the fractions of seconds were long when added up together.
On average, in each episode there may be a 10 second difference between the real screentime of a character and the screentime I calculated - but since it can be either more or less than reality, given the number of episodes and the fact that all of the characters are prone to this miscalculation, the overall screentime difference will probably be negligable.

Fluttershy seems to be the 3rd most on-screen character...

I guess I'm fine with this

Thanks.

Heh, I also held it on my to-do list for long. I think I waited 1-3 months (not sure) before I finally started making it.

Too big pictures act sometimes like this. You can still view it by clicking "Download Image" button on the right (it doesn't actually make you download the image; it just opens its bigger version in another window).

I used them to generate the cumulative frequency of distribution, it's not really easy to read but it shows interesting features over the time: [link]

I don't really have any clue what that means, but I don't like Fluttershy being at the bottom for a large segment of that graph

Beatfox [2012-02-24 08:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Most impressive work, I must say! My only real complaint about the presentation of the data is that it would've made more sense to use a grouped bar graph or something similar. A line graph is ideal for when your Y axis is a continuous metric like time - the line segments act as a visual interpolation of the sampling points and an approximation of the data that would fall between those points. In this instance, your Y axis is a discrete metric (episode number), and each position along that axis has no meaningful relation to the one before or after it; thus, the connecting line segments only serve to add visual clutter and distract from the actual data points.

This sort of thing takes a lot of dedication to put together, though, and I applaud you for that! Pretty neat to see how the characters get handled throughout the season.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dziadek1990 In reply to Beatfox [2012-02-24 08:59:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but the lines connecting the points in episodes make it easier to track each character's screentime; imagine how it would be painful to the eyes if there were so many bars or just points. Bars in 3d would make it also mor difficult to compare side-by-side so many characters - unless you could rotate them in 3 dimensions.

Łał, stary (no pun intended), wymiatasz! A ty to zrobiłeś. Kurczę, jesteś mistrzem! Chylę czapki.
Planujesz tak kiedyś przemaglować drugi sezon? ; )

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

dziadek1990 In reply to cygaj [2012-02-24 08:55:01 +0000 UTC]

Drugi sezon też zanalizuję, ale wpierw chyba inne ciekawostki statystyczne sobie zbadam: ciekawostki demograficzne Ponyville - populacja, ilość konkretnych instytucji wymaganych by zaspokoić potrzeby mieszkańców, statystyki śmierci mieszkańców, ekonomia. itp.

cygaj In reply to dziadek1990 [2012-02-24 12:28:51 +0000 UTC]

Powodzenia! I ze studiami, i z demografią Ponyville. Oszacuj populację, a będę klękać. Ciekawa jestem, co zrobisz z klonami i ze zjawiskiem związanym z całkowitym wyludnieniem miasta ("May the Best Pet Win" - pewnie było święto, albo godzina policyjna). I czemu nikt nie korzysta z biblioteki? To smutne.

Ignorowałem głosy, bym mógł sobie słuchać muzyki. Ciągłe słuchanie przerywanych co dwie sekundy kwestii postaci by było po czasie frustrujące.
