Description Portrait practice with noriko-kikhio 's OC Delphi.
She's having a rough time.

Trying to get into the habit of timing myself, so I now know this took 3 hours and 40 minutes. Woooo.

Hey there! I saw on the forum that you were looking to improve your portraits and I thought I would drop by and offer a critique. I wanna start off by saying that I love the wide range of values in this painting! It makes everything pop well. It looks like you're off to a really solid start with your painting technique, but it might need a little refining as there are some areas that look a little messy. But generally, the shading looks pretty correct and well done. I would just suggest cleaning things up a little bit more. As for anatomy/proportions, it seems like you have a pretty good grasp of them, but it could use a bit of refining as well. For instance, the eyes in this painting look a little bit crooked to me and there are certain areas of her neck that don't look quite right (this is a really hard pose to draw though.) I would make sure for more complex, semi-realistic stuff like this that you use a refrence photo to make sure the proportions and whatnot are correct. Sorry that was all kind of nit-picky, but I usually only nit pick when I think it will help take someone's art to the next level! Basically, I think this is already really excellent and with a little more refining, your portraits would become very professional looking! Keep up the good work!

Yes, I like this. Even though you only used grey tones, she still stands out from the background. Clever use of light and shading.

If I were to suggest something to improve on, I would advise to use more contrast. The background in this piece is very dark, which (as I understand) is meant to illustrate the dark state of mind this Delphi character is in. But it also makes this work stand out less than your other works. Which is why people might be less inclined to click it after seeing the thumb.

The eyes are obviously too large, but I understand you were going for a cartoon style? That's totally okay. But I do think that the left eye should be a little bit closer to her nose. Right now, it looks (a bit) like one eye is looking in one direction, and the other is looking in another direction. I think that effect would significantly lessen if you moved the left eye (her right eye -- left side of the canvas) closer to her nose. Experiment with it. Fiddle around till you feel it's right.

I love the shading you did on her neck, separating the neck and jawline. Her lips and nose look very realistic. Overall good job.

This is very dramatic. Ominous, even. Just not sure who's in danger.

Thanks!  That's what I was going for.  ^^  The danger is all around her, really.
