I have been working on this little oil painting of a male wood duck at the same time as I have been doing some drawings – and I finally finished him last night.

Wood ducks are such colorful little guys – and quite shy and timid. I have been wanting to paint one for a long time, and that desire got a lot stronger when I moved here. I have been watching some of the pairs that winter over in the local pond for the last couple of years now. Although the males are so striking with their bright colors and markings – I actually love the subtle colors of the little females even more. So there is a painting with a pair of wood ducks coming up in the future.

I knew I was breaking some composition rules when I laid this painting out, so to compensate for having the duck so far to the right, I painted it on a 12 x 24 gallery wrap canvas. Thus avoiding having to have a frame enclosing the painting and interfering with the composition.
