Thanks. And I have been practicing on scrap paper. From outlines, to crosshatching, to shadowing, to pupils, and more.

I have a question. Are Sakura Ink Pens (both felt tip and brush pens) fine to use as a temporary substitute for the Quill and brush? Because I am in a bit of a temporary situation where I can't use actual Ink with quills and brush and I am a bit of a beginner.

Absolutely! Use whatever works best for you and what you're comfortable with. You can get a lot of control with the pens and get devlop an understanding of how a brush moves with a brushtip pen.Β

Alright, thank you for the advice! Also another question, whenever I do use the Sakura Ink Pens and I erase the pencil lines under the ink with a normal eraser, the ink starts kind of "fading" in a sense, i was wondering if there's a way around this or if this is completely normal regardless of what ink I use?

EatToast In reply to Ninjahero51264 [2016-08-22 19:46:51 +0000 UTC]
That is normal with a lot of marker type pens, as you write on paper with them, the ink absorbs into the paper very quickly because these pens are designed to dry quickly. When you're erasing the very first layer of the paper and with it comes the ink or your eraser is pulling up the ink just a bit. You don't get that very often when you use a dip pen or brushed on thicker inks like sumi ink (my personal favorite), because the ink is thicker and sits on top of the paper as well as it being absorbed into the paper. The only downside is, is that as the ink sits on top of the paper with brushed on or dip/quill pen ink, is that if you want to use watercolors or markers to color your work, your wet media can rehydrate the ink and have it smear or if you color over it too quickly. Hope this helps!

Yes, thank you! This helps perfectly, I was looking for weeks for a solution to this. Unfortunately whilst I am not able to get traditional inks for now, I'll just keep practicing with the sakura ink pens until I am able to get traditional inks.
Also if I do use traditional inks, can Copic markers work for coloring as a substitute to the markers you used in this tutorial?

Glad I could help! Copics are the best markers out there, and I would recommend them! They're pricey, but worth every penny. I've had the same set for almost 7 years and have maybe had to replace a dozen markers over that time. They last forever and are a great medium to work with. At the time I made this tutorial, I could not yet afford them. I believe I made this the summer before I bought them.Β

Yeah, I was able to acquire a few, unfortunately not enough for shading with certain colors, and as of now, I am experimenting with them and so far it's going rather great, unfortunately I have yet to get a color blender for copics (cause I tend to make a lot of mistake with markers in general) seeing as the store that sells them is closed for a few weeks.

Best of luck! I found it was cheaper to buy the markers online on sites like Dick Blick, but they're out of stock due to demands globally for the markers.Β

Prismacolor markers are great to work with and are widely available. The alcohol marker market has widely expanded in the last few years, and there are a lot of generic brands out there, for example DickBlick has their own line out now, but I've never used them before.

Very nice and clear progression. Not a quill user but I do like to use brushes to add life to the lines.

You can get nib pens at most art stores, most of them come with a variety of nibs. Depending on what kind you get, most are about $10-15 (nibs included).
