Description I don't know if orcas have a sense of saltiness but this behavior makes me wonder if they do lol. It's an open mouth fast swim, a very splashy behavior in which they swim quickly with their heads above the water and mouths open. It's relatively new and this was my first time seeing it.

Taken at during One Ocean at SeaWorld San Diego on 1/1/12.

Ulises is my favorite I've never seen photos or videos of this trick, but I imagine he looks cute doing it no matter what he tries x3 The splashes and waves look nice in this!

Wonderful photo of Ulises All whales and dolphins hardly have any sense of taste; they do have tastebuds, but the part in the brain used for taste reception is extremely small and underdeveloped. Probably cetaceans don't need taste very much because their mouth is constantly awash with salt water that hardly changes concentration and that about everything they catch is good to eat

Actually dolphins can detect all primary tastes, sea lions on the other had it appears they have issues tasting salty and sweet tastes.
Results of a taste study: "Results indicate this bottlenose dolphin detected the four primary tastes in the solutions tested. The California sea lion detected salty and sour tastes and the bitter taste of quinine monohydrochloride dihydrate (QMD) solutions, but did not detect the bitter taste of quinine sulfate or the sweet taste of surose."

Dolphins can actually be quite picky with fish about the kinds they will and won't eat.

Oh, that's interesting! I never knew that, actually. Even though they can taste all primary tastes, aren't they less sensitive to (some) tastes than we are? Because I can imagine it being extremely annoying to constantly swim with that salty taste in your mouth. On the other hand, they might just be used to it

The dolphin tasted the difference between all of them. How much or what they actually taste will have to wait till we can talk to them, all we know is that they can taste the difference.
The sea lion on the other hand "did not detect the bitter taste of quinine sulfate or the sweet taste of surose."
"The bottlenose dolphin's taste acuity is roughly an order of mangnitude less then humans. The CA sea lion's threshold for sodium chloride is 20 times the human standard, but the threshold for citric acid is nearly the same. Seawater is isotonic with a 0.6 M sodium chlodride solution. Our results with sodium chloride solutions indicate that sea lions can detect salt solutions of even lower salinity."
Page 453 has the chart of how much of the solution was needed for humans, dolphins and sea lions.

Hah hah. Uly looks sooo damn cute when he tries to look fierce. XD We all know you are our cute cuddly goofy boy. And To be honest, I actually wonder the same thought too, even when they are eating underwater they would swallow alot of the salt in the water
