Description One hour study of a baby deer. Really rushed to meet the one hour mark so bare with the roughness of this haha! ;u;

Fantastic job! It's always refreshing to see a study from someone who clearly understands painting well.
Could you perhaps explain a bit about your choice of colors? In particular, I don't really understand how and why you chose pink, blue and green for certain parts of the deer. These colors don't seem to be present on the reference photo, but seem to work well in your painting. I guess the blue and green are intended to bring out the reds in the deer's coat by virtue of being kind of opposite from red on the color wheel? And the pink is intended to suggest green background without actually painting it green? But then the deer's neck is the closest green thing to the pink, and it is also very close to blue... What is this magic you art students do?

Omg thank you for the kind words!! I'm so flattered! I actually just recently started painting myself so most of it is still trial, error and following intuition. I also have a bit of common knowledge for watching so many painters almost everyday and see how they work.Β

For choosing the colors though I tend to choose a warm and cool color beforehand unless the tone of the drawing needs something different. I usually go with the normal reds and blues, but this time I wanted to be more "hippie" hahaha! So I went with the pinks, however I still decided to go with a warm copper red for it's strongest markings to stay true with the reference. Since I wanted to challenge myself to stay away with blue for the darker shadows, I then decided to go with a mushy green instead which coincidently is one of my favorite colors. As I worked I kinda thought the pink and the green colors looked more vintage, like those vintage rose patterns if that makes sense. So I guess you could say that was my overall inspiration or reference in my head for the palette. As for the very light blue I just needed an extra something to make it all pop. So despite not wanting to use blue, I did but as more of a light source than anything which I guess is forgivable xD. I just followed intuition on that one though blue is a cooler color than pink so I guess it made sense in the end? I also used a tiny bit of purple grey tones for the darker markings or shadows.
At the end of the day this was very experimental. My goal was to capture the likeness of the deer as quickly as possible and make quick decisions with the palette as well as have fun with it! Like Bob Ross iconically said, "just happy accidents"

Anyhow I hope this was somehow helpful! Your paintings have a lot of life to them already too, though I do agree most need a bit of color variation. I think the key to varying colors really is in experimentation and practice. Perhaps do some studies on your own too? Try to choose the most random colors and see if you can make them work or not maybe that helps build up your palette library inside your head for future works because you'll already have a fair knowledge of what colors work or not!
Forgive my long reply haha

Ooh, I see, so you expect the painting to have both warm and cool colors, and so you choose a pair of those before you paint any actual local colors. This makes a lot of sense and I would definitely try that some time. Thanks for such informative reply. Long replies are the best!Β Β

I live south of the US. The state I live in actually has quite a bit of deer, but not where I am located cuz it's more urban if that makes sense.
Lucky you live in the middle of the woods! I'd love that. And yes they are cute!!

ooooh, yes I live more northern united states.Β  it is nice in the middle of the woods, but sometimes I psych myself out into thinking there is more than just those deer lurking outside my windows-i'm such a scaredy cat with an overactive imagination x3Β  urban is nice too, though!
