When found, the remains of Bonitasaura were thought to have been a mixture of a titanosaurid skeleton and that of a diplodocoid. The shape of the skull, with its broad-fronted jaws, is extremely similar to that of the diplodocoid Nigersaurus. This indicates a rapid evolutionary expansion of the titanosaurids once the diplodocids, their evolutionary cousins, had died out, with the former taking over all the niches of the latter.
The amazing feature of this titanosaurid is the skull. The front of the jaw is broad and square, evidently adapted to cropping plants near the ground. The front teeth are short and pencil-like, rather like those of a diplodocid. Directly behind them, where the skull narrows, the jaws are equipped with horny blades evolved for slicing vegetation. Apart from this, the rest of the animal is similar to its relative Antarctosaurus. The species is named to honour Leonardo Salgado, the famous Argentinian sauropod specialist.
