I know what you mean. While I'm not nearly as skilled an artist as you, I also try to put a lot of details and time into my work. I have some stuff I spend weeks on...Β Β I just wish my skill could match the time I spend on them.Β
I work with GIMP 2.8. I only have the round brush. If I want any different sizes or patterns, I have to make them happen manually. Probably why I take so long.Β

I work on photoshop and couldn't even think about not using shortcuts to speed up the process.
One thing for sure is that our minds works faster than the clicks we made into select a tool, so since I used shortcuts I can "match" the speed of my mind into my workflow..
If you're interested on those, let me know and I'll share with ya..

I learned one shortcut for making starts, to copy-paste-rotate a set of dots. Sometimes I still speck some in by hand, I feel it helps it look more natural still.
I'd be interested in shortcut tips, but I don't know if GIMP can do any of them.Β
