Description During the Great War, messenger dogs could be truly vital for communication in the field. In Britain, they were attached to the Royal Engineers' Signalling units; they were ultimately responsible for all types of communication, which included not only animals, but new technology like the field telephone too. These devices were connected via physical wires, which were both often cut off and dangerous to lay out. A man could easily lose his life running through no-man's land, being a big and slow target, and the wire really was of no use if it didn't reach the other end. Thus, sometimes messenger dogs would run carrying not only their written messages on their collars, but harnesses with telephone wires attached too.

Nell was often trusted with this task, of course.

It is of course not the best idea to be perched on a hill and be very visible to everyone around but I was after the composition 8| Logic? What?

Other fun facts: I recently bought an iPad to replace my old one that died on me last year, and this one is a Pro no less!

Two weeks into owning it I have to say that I am super pleased with it. It’s like a small computer (and is probably more powerful than my main computer) and I honestly couldn’t be happier that I sold my Cintiq to replace it with this iPad *hides* Now it feels like I can be much more mobile with my art, which is new and exciting! I am a digital artist at my core and especially recently I've felt kinda locked to my computer because this is where I can work. It still is my real workstation, but when I feel like doing "less serious" art and digital doodles I can make them anywhere now

Soo to see what this new bit of tech can do I made a test drawing, and this is the one~
It's 99% done on the iPad using the Apple Pencil with Sketchbook Pro and Procreate (the last 1% was for running it through Photoshop for resizing and watermarking). The process feels kinda clunky and inefficient for this type of art still, but with a bit of practise I might be able to get somewhere with it. Fun!

Wonderful piece! I love how the cool shading mixes along with the light.
I enjoy looking close to the ears and notice all the details you went in with that raining.
The background is stunning! Everything has been done well and looks really nice with each other.
The clouds gave me a cool vibe, making the border collie and the cliff to stand out.
Everything has been done well, the lighting, the shading, the fur, the face expression! You're really talented!

Yaaay, thank youuu

(And gosh I have picked bits and pieces from so many sources now... Dogs running with wires came from a book called ”Animals in the Eye of the War” I think, but it’s in Swedish D: The best is still Richardson’s book by far, but I know you’re familiar with that one The Imperial War Museum has a lot of cool bits of info too, and an amaazing photo archive!)
