Archie Comics actually did create a "Mecha Knuckles" waayyyyyyy the heck back in 96' or 97'. It was one of many "Sonic-48-pg.-Specials" and this particular one was called "Sonic vs Knuckles: MECHA MADNESS". For an intro backstory you'd have to refer to Sonic issue #39 (damn, I feel old). Both the issues were drawn by legendary Sonic-artist SPAZ, who normally does the covers.
I did a fanart of his Mecha Knux design and it's in my gallery so go check it there if like.
I can also e-mail you some fresh homemade scans from the comic if you want.

All the bolts lining his body give him an interesting steampunk feel, as opposed to the sleek metal plating usually shown in the comics. Really nice.
