I would really love to go there someday
I totally fell in love with their culture (what I can read about it in books and internet).
I've been in Greece almost ten years ago and I remember what a big shock was for me that it's not ancient any more (well I was still a child and never before abroad ) I suppose Japan is the same- totally diffrent from what I image.

Hot summer, a lot of swimming and fun !
I think You should do both trips

How did you do this? Is it some kind of folding?

Thank you!
Those are small squares (5cm each) starched, folded and glued together. [link] - it's a great tutorial how to make those beauties

Habutae goes either way: You like it or you hate it. You're more likely to hate it if you've been using hot glue for a long time but love it if you're a perfectionist who wants every petal perfectly shaped and in place

These ones are very cute and the stamens really stand out on the black

elblack In reply to myloko [2010-01-22 14:53:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
I've never used hot glue...
Those are my first flovers: they are starched and then attached with rice glue- even the stamens are on rice glue
Suprisingly it's sttached really strongly and the starch makes everything so stiff...
I think that I'm from those which love a little bit of perfection so I will have to try with silk soon

Kanzashi-Hime [2010-01-20 14:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Wow, those look excellent! You've done an excellent job assembling these and I loved how you've finished them with the stamen and gems.

Don't worry, I'm using a lining material instead of silk for all my kanzashi's...though I'm interested to see how different it would be to work with the real deal.

elblack In reply to Kanzashi-Hime [2010-01-21 15:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Aww... Thank you! You are too kind

Do you really use lining material instead of silk? I was sure that it was habutai!

Once again thanks for lovely compliments

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kanzashi-Hime In reply to elblack [2010-01-21 23:22:42 +0000 UTC]

I only give compliment when they are deserving and yours definitely deserves to be complimented

And yep...to be honest, I didn't even realise they used habutai silk traditionally until recently and when I went in search of some at fabric stores, they cost a mini fortune per metre and had about 3 colours T___T. I found an online store that sells for half the price but I haven't ordered any yet. Personally I think lining material works just as well for a fraction of the price but want to definitely give habutai a shot

elblack In reply to Kanzashi-Hime [2010-01-22 15:02:16 +0000 UTC]

Tell me about it... In my small town in Poland lady in the fabric store told me that it's impossible to buy any kind of silk there... At the moment I have three colours bought on ebay Ł4.80 per meter ( [link] ). I think that it's quite a deal because any satin in Poland is in similar prices... But the lining fabrics are much cheaper and they are thin- definately worth a try
Many of the kanzashi makers are dying the fabrics by themselves- I only saw once how my mum was dying something a long thime ago... But maybe someday I will try it myself?

Kanzashi-Hime In reply to elblack [2010-01-23 02:29:06 +0000 UTC]

lol, that's the seller I found too, but the Australian equalivant (they seem to have an account for each major currency). I just ordered some off of them yesterday and now am playing the waiting game again

I was also think along the same line as you, dye doesn't seem overly difficult when it comes to silk, just a bit time consuming...but here is a link I found for dyeing silk for kanzashi: [link]

elblack In reply to Kanzashi-Hime [2010-01-23 11:38:10 +0000 UTC]

If you ordered form them then I'm sure it won't take a long to receive it- usually the things from China arrives so slowly... But this one is different
Thanks for the link- I saw it once though...
But it brings a quetion to my mind: are you registered at Immortal Geisha forum? I've been thinking thats a good idea, but I'm still not sure... I like more to observe than write...

Kanzashi-Hime In reply to elblack [2010-01-24 02:46:51 +0000 UTC]

I am registered, have been for years, but I think the number of posts I've done are under 50 posts. I'm much the same, I tend to read more than I write...the only times I do post are when I'm asking for advice or can advise someone else on something.

elblack In reply to Kanzashi-Hime [2010-01-24 04:49:49 +0000 UTC]

So maybe I should too?
Strangely in the summer time I only knew about Japan that it consist of major three islands, they eat rice and that it's the place when my childhood animation- Sailor Moon was made
Now I'm learning the language, reading everything I can find about Geisha and want to create kanzashi... Who would of know that it will turn out like this?
Well I don't know eighter why I'm writing this... It's almost morning in here and I'm still not sleepy...

Sure, I don't see why you shouldn't, plus it's handy to have an account when you want to post something.

I am much the same with my fascination for everything Japanese, which all began, strangely enough, with my fascination for the Chinese Hanfu. While in search of the outfit I stumbled upon the Kimono, which lead to my fascination with Kanzashi's and Maiko.

Sailor Moon was my first anime too! It's the one that got me hooked on anime and began my adventure in drawing - which I post on another DA account.

So I did

I think that my beggining is jut very simple (or not?).
You see- I speak english fluently, been learning french for six years so I thought that it would look good on my CV to have another- now 'exotic' language- and then (not knowing the consequences ) I choosed japanese. When I decided I thouth that it would be good to know a LITTLE BIT more about their culture and so I fell in love with it

I remember my notebooks when I was 7-9 y.o. the backs were all covered with drawings of Sailor Moon But then my class profile was art so from 10 to 13 I had around 6 hours of painting and sculpture per week- it was a time when I started to hate it... (way to many classes everyday...)
I think that after those past 6 years I recovered at last So it's my renesaince

You have another account on DA? Can you send me a link to it? I would love to see your works!

That's so awesome, how long have you been studying Japanese? And I absolutely can relate with the notebook thing, mine was filled with a bunch of anime doodles through out highschool...it got to a point where I'd just cover my book in blank paper and doodle during class time lol

I'm not very good compared to most of the other anime drawers on DA but here is the link: [link] I haven't updated in a while because my fascination with Kanzashi kicked in.
