Description Again, part of the same class project as the last one, Tarrot Card Strength. For the big skirt I have refered to Blackeri's awesome drawing "Vanity" since the time for the project is tight and I really do not have any time to design one (Thanks a lot Blackeri! If you do not like me posting this drawing, please send me a note and I will delete it immediately). I personally like this picture a lot since it is my first tempetation to drawing something that is not comic/anime style. It do not turn out to be too bad, although I should say I am just a beginner of digital painting...

I love the detail you've gone into shading her skin. <3 I like the pose, but I think it would've looked alot more powerful if you'd drawn her with her staff actually touching the ground instead of her just holding it like a mere item.
Great job on the background too! The colour-scheme is wicked. ^____^

elflling In reply to loba79 [2005-10-28 14:12:37 +0000 UTC]

No... This card is just drawn and colored in ps7. Most of it drawn in the plain round brush, just vary the opacity, flow and thickness. At that time I was new to photoshop actually (I still am) so I do not know many techniques. Basically I just drew it like a conventional drawing: Sampling different colors and repaint over. The right arm and shoulder are completely stiff and I have to fix them sometime. The whole drawing is for a class project so time is my major concern and it is not quite finished when I submit...

I'm so happy you like it~~~

The term "Reference" means inspiration, which I do not mind at all but even encourage. The lower part of the dress though is obviously copied pixel to pixel.

delightful to look at - very graciuos pose and skillful work with the details of the dress - although i must say it is still very plain for a tarot card (even so i like it a lot) :claps:

( ) But I'm just so happy you like it. I am lazy too and I haven't been drawing for one week already I guess I should just shut up and go drawing but OMG I love chatting online and seeing other people's work... Thanks~~ I am really glad you like the work... I spent a lot of time on the hair trying to get the current look, and I'm so happy it turns out to be OK... (I have never drawn non-anime style hair before...)

kristen2009 [2005-05-10 23:10:47 +0000 UTC]

First off, you have a very good start on Digital Media. I, myself, am just starting to get used to a NEW program, so I kind of know what you're doing... Kind of... >___<;;;

You're first time trying to draw something NOT in anime style??? *shakes head* A lot better looking than MY first attempt, I'll give ya that! Now, let's get to the critiques... First the good, then the bad.

The skintones are very well done; I think proper tones in the skin can be pretty hard to do, so good job. The dress has so many tones and folds, I like the way that came out. THE DETAIL IN THE HANDS IS REALLY GREAT. They really look like close to real hands. And, finally, the hair was done pretty well. I like the way you made it so you can see the individual strands in the hair.

Now the negative... Oh, boy. The strands in her face seem darker than the rest of her hair. *nods* Her right hand *to our left...* doesn't seem to fit into the dress... I don't know if I'm wording that very well, but if you look at it, it looks like the hand isn't on her hips. It looks... eh, I hope you know what I'm talking about... >.<;;; Her face looks a bit masculine to me... o.o;;; Maybe thin out the neck a bit and *maybe* level the shoulders a bit. For the most part, the lips are okay. I think maybe make the upper lip a bit fuller. The eyes could be a little bigger... I, personally, like bigger eyes. Not too much bigger! I think that if the eyes are a bit bigger, she won't look quite as masculine. The nose is a little bit out of proportion. It's mostly just the nostrils, it's not too big of a deal... The tones on the ears look a bit darker than the rest of her skin. She has no left wrist!!! O__o;;; Her right arm is a little out of proportion in the lower arm. It's not too big of a deal, but straightening out the arm a little better could fix most of the problem. Her upper right arm is also a bit fuzzy looking. Making that a bit more solid can simply take that problem away. FINALLY, her tiara is a bit too bright from the rest of the picture... Just darken it up a bit...

One tiny other thing. the gate design in the background seems a bit plain from the rest of the picture... Maybe some tones can make it fit in a bit more with the rest of the picture. ^_____^

Don't worry too much about my critiques. It might seem to be a lot, but most are very minor and easy to fix. ^______^

elflling In reply to kristen2009 [2005-05-10 23:35:08 +0000 UTC]

I am so really moved...... And currently reading through the critique. It is so very true! The hand position was changed three times and still could not get it quite right, and the hair strands were added at the last minute (before the project due) with a different color (...) The face used a reference photo yet the rest of the body has not, this is probably why the neck and shoulder does not look so natural... (Sweating...) The eye and nose are intend to look like the reference photo, yet the proportion... does not look quite right despite all my trys (.......) Ears are made after all the rest of the picture is done so the tones are again using a different color... All kinds of problems. (The gate was taken from Mucha, again, running out of time to decorate it, I am just so slow in drawing...)

I think I will modify this picture after a while in the summer holidays and resub it. It is far from really finished... And thank you so much for spending time pointing out all the shortcomings! I really need critiques since I'm still just learning to draw not only digitally, but in fact, with colors as a whole. I have only done black and white pictures before...

Thanks again for the long and detailed comment... (...)

You're welcome! I'm sure once you get the time to change things it'll look better. ^_____^ I didn't quite know that you were finishing it all up at the last minute! O.o;;; I know that can make a picture sloppy in itself, so... Some of the little mishaps on this picture I can understand when being done at the last minute.

I really do hope you get to fix it up, because it can be a very, very nice picture! ^________^

I am actually not doing a whole set... I just did several cards in different styles for a class project. Designing a set of card requires a lot of study and consideration of consistence, style, symbols... I really wanted to do that but I am just too lazy... Hope to see yours posted here soon! (Actually, could you send me a link if you post your design here? That would be so great! Thanks ^_^ I really enjoy seeing different design for Tarrot Cards...)

^_^ It is true... I have never used a tablet to paint before this semester, before I took the photoshop class. I spent a lot of time on this picture and I had reference images to look at when painting. I was not drawing out of my head. So it is nothing fancy truely. And there are so many people good at digital painting here. So I feel there is nothing I can boast about... But I am very glad that you like it ^_^ I will keep on practice and try to make things go better...

I was going to tell that her dress was like Blackeri's... I like your idea of Strength, she's wearing gold, and I love her face expression, very real like. I just thing some contrast on the skin would be great

elflling In reply to MayYeo [2005-05-03 03:38:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I referred to Blackrei's "Vanity" to draw the dress, since the time for the project is tight... () (And I mentioned that in the description of this page, Thanks again Blackrei~~~) Thanks for viewing my page and leave comments, MayYeo! You know how much I like your work. I will probably revise the skin tones in the future two or three days and try to add some contrast to make it look better. Thanks a lot for my suggestions... I am still learning CG drawing skills, so suggestions and critics would be really nice... Thanks! ^_^
