Yeah, their being leaders - or at least commando operatives - would make more sense to me. It's pretty common for a team to be represented by one member, especially in a setting like that scene.
That said, this guy looks more like a Rex to me. Yes, I know Rex is a very overused dog name (but then my parents picked John, so who am I to criticize?), but he just looks like it, you know?
