Description A Fairy in Winter Challenge
Pick of the Week [link]

"This manipulation has the 'wow-factor' in spades! It is a classically beautiful winter scene with a fairy watching the waterfall. Full of muted colors that give a real cold feel. I'm just not sure about the stylized snowflakes, I'm not sure they were a necessary addition to an otherwise very realistic scene."

I do agree. The snowflakes will be edited as soon as possible.

Thank you. I had to experiment to find the right colors for that one, so I'm very happy it wasn't a waste of time.

So natural, mystical and realistic all at the same time. Just me, but I love the snow. I actually thought it was more like glittering fairy lights then snow before I read your description.

Thank you so much... It had to be as realistic as possible, as if fairies were real.
I'm glad you like it!!

An eye catching piece; best of luck in the competition.
I'd not worry about faeries being "small beings" in the realm of fantasy and imagination you are not bound by other's conceptions. Though I did note a few peculiarities, things faeries would probably not have: wedding band, zippered costume, and being in bare feet when sitting on cold stone in the Winter snow.

I realized that I had not edited my description... I have just done so. I was very lucky in the competition. And I'm humbled by the comment that was made about my entry.

As for the few pecularities... I'm a new member in the group who held the challenge, and I didn't know how much I could change the required stock (the model). I was very tempted to "erase" the wedding band and the zipper, but would it have looked "painted"? I still have a lot to learn about photomanipulation v. mixed media. As for her being barefoot, since she's not wearing much to begin with, it has never struck me as that strange. lol.

Thank you for your constructive criticism.

Lovely work, the snowflakes are a very nice touch! You should tell your fiance that only in modern times has fairy become synonymous with a small being - in ancient times they were tall, angelic creatures who could assume a tiny stature at will. So, no need to feel constrained to put them in a suitable "tiny" setting - if they are magical, they can change to suit their surroundings (or to hide!)

ElissandrAnne In reply to Nolamom3507 [2013-01-24 10:43:06 +0000 UTC]

True. But in the folklore, fairies were far too often described as beings full of malice, sometimes they even were some sort of ghosts, and humans had to protect themselves from them... It's not really the kind of stories I want to tell right now with my photomanipulations.

So, I should have been more explicit. Nowadays, when we think about fairies, what is the image that comes to mind first? I believe that most people would answer, "Tink!" lol. That's the kind of fairies I like to have in my photomanipulations, hence the reference to tiny beings. And to me, it makes it even more challenging... to make a photomanipulation around a very small winged creature. I love to challenge myself, and my fiance helps me stay on track (I will never dare admit here how many versions of each of my fairies he's had to look at... he'll probably hate them or start having nightmares soon, lol).

This conversation about "old" fairies and modern fairies has just given me an idea... Thank you so much for your great comment!!
