Description
Pangolins are nocturnal insectivores covered head to toe in scales made of keratin, similar to your own fingernails. They may look like anteaters or armadillos, but they are their own order of mammals called Pholidota. There are eight different species of pangolin, all of which are classified as endangered by the WWF. Poaching and trafficking have contributed to the decline of pangolin populations in Asia and Africa, but in 2016 they were given full protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
