Description Poblem fixed! After hooking up my monitor with a better cable and employing my new best friend, Photoshop CS5, I could finally see the problem and correct it. Yay for updated technology!

-------
It's finally finished. Really this shouldn't have taken me that long, but just as I was doing the final save before I submitted to dA... ArtRage crashed. I -almost- died. Luckily I found a copy of the file on my backup hard drive, but I lost about half my work.... sooooo yeah. O_O

So the motive behind this came from several sources, not the least of which being a undesirable trend I've noticed in my gallery - everything is so static. I really need to experiment with motion and energy. This was one attempt, but I'm not totally satisfied - therefore, I would love some serious critique please! (I don't have the fancy button, but I'm still asking okay?) If you have any thoughts on improvement in this area, I'm all ears - along with whatever other suggestions you may have. Also, if you know an artist on dA or off who you believe demonstrates motion in an interesting way, I hope you'd share . Thank you!

The general concept for this image came while listening to a random CD that someone left in my car... "Glamour of the Kill" is the name of the band I believe.

I"m not the best person to offer comment on this as I, too, have pretty static images. One thing that I'm puzzled about as I look at the image is whether the splash coming from bottom right is what is giving her hair momentum? If so, shouldn't some droplets extend past beyond her face?

Well, she's supposed to be flipping it actually. That's uh... been lost on many people who've seen it here at home, too. ;^^ Which of course means there's something wrong. Do you think more looseness in the face overall would help? The green is more of a symbolic thing. It's meant to give the impression of the music - sort of a bright, explosive, outward-pushing force.

Thanks so much for the comments, s-girl! In my opinion, everyone's impression is imporant whether they feel like they's mastered the techniques or not. For this type of image if the point/mood/action/whaterver is not apparent to the viewer, then I've failed on some level.

all this to say, thish is a great picture. I LOVE her face. Don't touch it... try the hair and see if it helps. Maybe even blur some of it at the ends so we see it in motion.

Ahaha, I honestly don't think I could anyway. I've already painted it twice now!

The pics I found on flickr aren't quite right as I think the persons flipping hair are coming out of the water... so a lot of the curve on the hair that I think is needed is coming from the drag of the water.
([link] ) .

But there are some inteeresting ideas in that shot. You could use your green elements to indicate motion... also change the back of her head around slightly as the hair closer to the base of her skull won't undulate as much as the hair farther away. (Her hair should be thought of like a pendulum, with the farther parts showing much more swing variation?)

Don't know if that made sense, but maybe the pictures will job some ideas.

Yeah, I get what your saying! I could do quite a lot to exagerate the sweeping motion overall. I certainly like the thought of adding more green .
I like the shape of the hair in the "Happy New Year" image - that's about what I envsisioned in my mind's eye.

You know what helps a lot with those photos is that we also see more of the body sort of telling us what is going on. (There's a lean in those bodies and the arms also help sort of illustrate what the body is doing.)

That's another thought to try to play with there ...

Yeah, Paimonerra (up there ^ ) said a very similar thing. My first sketch included more of the body, as well as the arms, but I had major issues with foreshortening. So I didn't do it. Lazy!

Heh. All you need to do is put that word in the mouth of an instructor and then you know you'll sit down and try again!

Gorgeous!
A lot of my stuff is really static, too, so I'm not the best person to offer critique? But I will, anyway? LOL! I think you did really well, here. Obviously the hair is the biggest indicator of dramatic movement, as well as the green, but it's still not quite there.

Her torso still feels so flat. I would actually suggest a more dynamic pose to easily achieve your movement - like maybe you draw her some arms and position them... ah... how to explain? Well I don't know. :'D Of course, that's adding something that wasn't even in your original picture, but that's often what you have to do.

A more simple thing to work with, I think, are her clothes. Or her jacket, more specifically. If the fabric moved dynamically, it would make this an entirely different picture. The flaps of the jacket could extend further to the left, like there's a strong wind blowing from the right side to left - since she's flipping her hair over her head. Her jacket looks thick, so if you made it a different fabric, there's a LOT more you could do with it in terms of movement.

IDK. I hope that helped.

If you have working eyeballs, you can critique.

Yeah, I think I confined it too much. I sorta had this idea of her arms thrown wide behind her but I couln't work it out. I wouldn't mind revisiting this pose again, though. (I already have in some unrelated sketches not posted on dA)

I think I overwork things most of the time. If I kept my strokes looser in the fabric 'n such maybe I could make it look more light and flippy. I should really practice speed painting!

Thanks a bunch, I always enojoy your input!

Sometimes I just think people need to practice what they preach. Y'know? If someone tries to critique a piece of mine when really they give no indication that they are capable of doing that themselves... and not because lack of talent! Just. IDK. Like they try to critique the composition when all their compositions are fucking horrendous. Hahaha! Anyway.

Oh, that pose sounds like a really neat idea! I think that would look awesome, if you do decide to re-do the pose.

And I feel you - it's hard not to overwork things. Speed painting is an ace idea! I know that for me (and I love perfect lines and precise details), gesture drawing a lot helps loosen me up and imbues more movement and elegance into my illustrations. [I don't do digital, so speed painting is irrelevant for me, ha!]

You're welcome!

cool. but there is a hard edge on the left, perhaps its from the texture layer. Turn down the monitor's brightness, may be you can see it tht way.
The flow of the pic is splendid leading by the splashes and hair threads.

Ugh. I noticed that myself last night when I looked at it on my PSP screen, but no matter how I adjust my computer monitor it just won't show up. I think I'm going to scrap this until I figure out how to fix it.
Thanks for the comments Lek, most appreciated.
