On this date, February 9, eight years ago, Maura Murray disappeared and was never heard from again. At the time of her disappearance, Maura was just 21 years old. A nursing student. A track runner. A loving girlfriend. A daughter. A sister. A friend. On a cold and snowy February night, Maura disappeared from the U-Mass campus and drove off into the night. In her run-down car, she had an accident in New Hampshire, in Haverhill on Route 112. The snow was everywhere that day. It was near the woods. Maura was never seen or heard from again.
There is a lot of speculation about what happened, none of which was ever substantiated. This piece, showing a girl walking off into the woods, was just an artistic rendition on the mystery surrounding her disappearance. It is highly unlikely that Maura wandered off into the woods. Moreover, no prints were ever found in the snow.
I wish to dedicate this piece to Maura's family and all her loved ones.
I also wish to encourage everyone who might have some information, who might have seen or heard something - anyone with any suspicions or leads, however seemingly insignificant - to come forward and contact the authorities. Please remember that there are people still searching for Maura. These people are in pain. Not knowing, for them, is the worst possible scenario. And it was this scenario precisely that has been ever-present for eight long years to the date.
This piece is titled after the book that was found in Maura's car, "Not Without Peril: 150 Years of Misadventure on the Presidential Range of New Hampshire" by Nicholas S. Howe. It was reported to be one of Maura's favorites. I have no affiliation to the book or the author, I just borrowed the title, for it fit in with the overall gloom Maura's disappearance has left in her wake.
