The element of Air stands for thought, ratio, the life of the mind, ideas, concepts and the way we make decisions. The Ace as the first card of the suit represents the first flicker of consciousness, the moment an idea or a thought are formed. The card shows that we are able to see through illusions and realize the logical way forward. We face the facts and establish what is right and wrong. We also feel that we can trust our way of reasoning things out and that it will lead us in the right direction.
Traditionally the Ace of Swords card shows a hand brandishing a sword that at its tip is piercing a crown and means that we can use the powers of our mind to penetrate to the truth. The sword has two sharp edges reminding us that our minds are double-edged weapons. We can use our ratio to face up to the facts, be honest with ourselves and do the right thing. We can also use logic and sophistry to muddy the waters, to tell ourselves and others lies and to justify doing wrong.
As with the other cards I returned to the original element of Air. Here the central knotwork ring surrounds an aerial view of a hurricane whirling around its central eye. This stands for the whirling dynamic of an active mind and the singular focus it can achieve. It also still embodies the destructive and problematic side of using our ratio while excluding our intuition and compassion. The background of the card shows a cloudscape with light and dark and smaller knotwork medallions with the elementary symbol of air, an upwards-pointing triangle that is bisected horizontally, the symbols for Mercury and Jupiter which are aligned with the element and the three air-signs of the Zodiac: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.
When pulled or in a spread the card means that we want to express ourselves. It could be that we are ready to come forward with an idea, that we are recognizing a truth, want to be honest with ourselves or with someone else, need to clear the air or are able to face the facts. Whatever the impulse is, we should move forward while trusting our ability to reason things out. We should try and be objective and hold on to our belief in ourselves while being honest about our limitations and the things we don't know.
In a relationship or career position the card may mean that we are able to achieve a breakthrough though diligent problem solving and by thinking and talking things out. Offer up your insights and ideas and they should be met with interest and the willingness to brainstorm and to collaborate by others.
In a blockage or challenge position the card may indicate that you are stuck in analysis/ paralysis mode. You are thinking about a problem so much that your mind feels trapped in a hamster wheel and you'll never be able to progress to action. You may also be too rigid in your approach and let your mistrust of your feelings override your valuable gut instinct. You could also be stubborn and dismissive of the valid and helpful ideas of others.
