Ellygator — HP Tarot - King of Swords

Description (2007) 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" Pencil on Paper. Processed and framed in Photoshop.

Getting on with the court cards I'll get into the Swords next. I chose members of the Black family for this suite, because they are probably the folks most at odds with one another, and Swords and conflict do go together quite a bit.

For the King I have Sirius Black, trapped in his family home with his family tree hemming him in in the back, and Kreacher in the front. All that's left to remind him of his glory days of rebellion are his biker boots. Otherwise his past has caught up with him as he is stuck at Grimmauld Place.

It's just....... WOW !!! The tapestry is amazing and so is Sirius . You did a brilliant job on him. He looks, like he wants to jump out of the picture, just to get away from Grimmauld Place.

The first thing you notice about this Tarot card is the tapestry in the background. I like the idea of the tapastry and its words Toujours Pur (Always Pure). It seems only fitting that this is presented along with a drawing of Sirius. Sirius Black has always had difficulty accepting his family and their ideals. He was a rebel and wanted to escape from his family ties. So the idea that he is now caught at Grimmauld Place and his past has finally caught up with him only adds to the sense of conflict lying within the meaning of the Suit of Swords.

I really like the way you have made a link to the Queen of Swords card featuring Bellatrix (Black) Lestrange. They are both in posession of a knife in their right hand which is a strong symbol of independence. They are after all two characters who are very much alike, though also different, especially in their views of the world.

And Kreacher at the bottom is a very nice detail!

Definitely what I wanted to do with the tapestry, thanks so much! The claustrophobic detail was to reinforce that point as much as I could.

Well, you really managed to make it claustrophobic! It really feels like Sirius is caught and can't get out. I guess he had some very serious problems concerning his family when he was young.

I do love this piece...and, for once, I...actually have something to say, if I may be so bold (and don't take this the wrong way, I still love the darn thing more than anything I've ever created)

Black's face...seems a bit pinched...narrow? But I can't decide if it's the picture or my computer...so, nevermind maybe. blah.

I know, I like the boots. They were actually a pair of Harley-Davidson ones of a set my brother had wanted for him and his girl-friend. Well the girl-friend ones didn't fit her, but they fit me! So they're mine now and I got her a pair a size larger. (And between us we don't even own a single motorbike. LOL!)

awesome! He looks angry and annoyed with that knife in his hand, like a warning almost. He's caged up in the black house. Its the little details again, i love the black family tree, his biker boots and the reflections on the floor!

just for fun I looked up king of swords, because I really love the character of Sirius. in my book it says of king of swords: "he is mentally alert, inventive, of an original turn of mind, and essentially rational in outlook... because of his versatility he often fails through lack of steady purpose; having formulated one plan he then proceeds to the next with undue haste. he is an advocate of modernity at the expense of tradition. (reversed he may produce chaos in the name of order"

I think that sounds very sirius like.. he had so many great schemes and plans and everything went wrong for him because of the way he rushed into things.. just my take.
