Description (2010), 9" x 12", pencil on paper.

The reference for this magnificent lion is a fantastic shot taken by

Not only was he kind enough to allow me to use his photograph to make the drawing. He also sent me a large version of his file so I could really work on the textures of the fur. Thank you!

just a regular pencil? or one of those art ones

Ellygator In reply to flashtail101 [2011-09-24 20:19:55 +0000 UTC]

Just regular ones, I prefer HB for the lighter, finer work and 3B for the heavier shadows.

Nice work! I honestly thought that we had used the same reference (I've done a lion that looks almost exactly the same) until I saw the thumbnail

Indeed. I'm glad I was able to do something special for her before she passed at least And would you agree that our lions both look very similar?

Definitely the same kind of vibe when looking. Who did you use for a reference?

He's amazing! He's so true to the photo, one not familiar with your art might think he's some sort of special effect filter applied to the original photo. Although I feel your piece is more impressive than any such photo manipulation would ever be.

I also love how you've managed to make the lion look like a wise, bearded old man... almost as if this was a picture of Dumbledore or other such wise, bearded old men. Hey, maybe that's why his hair is such a mess... he's taken off his cap and has a serious case of hat head!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to UrsulaPatch [2010-06-24 20:16:56 +0000 UTC]

LOL! I like the idea of a lion with hat-head. And yeah, it was really odd to see that somehow in drawing from the reference some kind of human element seemed to creep into the design. It was not intentional in the beginning, but I've always felt a very strong affinity for lions and perhaps that has something to do with it...

LG-Young [2010-05-31 15:52:44 +0000 UTC]

I really like the way you've captured his eyes, and especially the bedraggledness of the top of his mane; most lion drawings tend to be that of perfectly coiffed specimens that just strode out of Salon de Panthera.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to LG-Young [2010-06-07 19:01:09 +0000 UTC]

LOL! I like that comparison, but yeah, this was a truly free savanna lion complete with scraggly mane and infested with flies, poor thing!
