How should I actually hold it?

My English knowledge has limitations, but I'll try: sharp side in "one line" with your hand (so if you'd strike someone vertically, he would be actually cut). Like for example here: [link] (first google for "wielding sword") or [link] - the handle is also profiled to be wielded this way (you can than operate it with your arm and wrist).

Oh. Actually I think that was how I held it in the beginning but we somehow decided to change it because the katana couldn't be seen more prominently that way in this angle.

I made it by bending wires and using hot glue to make the gemstone
Its really quite easy and I bet you can do it if you test and trial out yourself
