Description "Amama Ua Noa" is Hawaiian for "Now the Prayer has Flown" and is the traditional way to end a prayer... after you have given your thoughts and words your voice and wings and sent them to the Akua (the Gods)

An image that burns into my mind, especially regarding Pa'u riders (the tradition of the ladies of the court to ride with long skirts that trailed out behind the horse's tails... which has now become mostly just for parades) is the one that was famously written by Isabelle Bird about her trip to Hawaii in the 1800s. She wrote quite beautifully and lyrically about the ladies of the court riding barefoot with their skirts ("Pa'u") trailing and how beautiful it was when they were all clad in white.

I had this vision of the simple white Pa'u and combined with the gold of yellow flowers in the lei's and the golden palomino horse with a beautifully flowing mane... and I followed the theme of Isabelle Bird's description and the idea of the unbound manes flowing in the wind, which she describes as a zenith of freedom and carefree joy... and as I often feel that way on the rare occasion that I get to allow my own horse to chase the wind that I often feel like spreading my arms and looking to the heavens and simply being at one with that moment of flight... the flight of my prayers to the gods... and the flight of my soul as it soars untamed and unafraid.

I often say that my horse, and the moments we spend together, are my religion... they are the place I go where I know prayers are heard
...Amama Ua Noa!

It is a beautiful tradition... unfortunately one that is dying more and more. I am hoping to begin a revival of it here soon. There are some traditions I believe that should not be lost to obscurity, and the original descriptions of it are beautiful. Even some of the more serious moments where it is done for the bigger parades are impressive. It is definitely a strong visual image that it provokes even in written description.
