So I am working on a story with mermaids and I am drawing my characters. I have worked on some anatomy as in organs for them but I wanted to know if I could get your permission to use this as reference. I wont be drawing the muscular anatomy but it would help me a lot. Great work on this I love it and the skeletal anatomy too.

You are certainly welcome and encouraged to use this and the skeleton as reference for your own drawings!

This is so very interesting! I just wish there was a book sort of like this.. you know, with the anatomy of mythical creatures.. I would definitely buy it.

...Is that a vagina?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

empyrean In reply to RyuukaTamura [2012-04-02 08:16:09 +0000 UTC]

Long answer: while the internal structure known as the 'vagina' is not visible in this diagram, the ligaments and tissues underlying and comprising the genital slit and surrounding area are.

Short answer: basically, yeah.

What about a merman anatomy makeup? Would it be similar?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

empyrean In reply to artemismoonguardian [2012-05-18 17:39:05 +0000 UTC]

Shoulder-waist-hip ratios would be different, but the general layout of the musculature would likely be similar across the genders. Individual variance would be more significant.

So the ratios would be different for the males but their muscle structure is pretty much similar.

Whoa, I didn't actually expect a reply. Now I feel kinda awkward.
I mean, I can't exactly say "vulva" or something, because it's comprised of skin, which is the organ you don't have shown in this picture, and I don't even know if dolphin genitalia is supposed to be called a vulva anyway.

The reason I asked was because this was featured on a blog about anatomy of mythological creatures, and in the comments one person observed that none of the diagrams showed any reproductive organs, so that made me start paying extra close attention to each one, which led me to notice that yours had a slit in the general area. I've been pondering this question for a long time before finally finding the original picture on your deviantart, so thank you very much for replying.

WHEW THAT WAS LONG.

Thanks for posting this superb piece! I've never seen such a unique and intricate study--a presentation of a fantasy (so we hear...) creature approached with believable, scientific realism. A brilliant idea well executed.

you know, it was always one of my goals to make a skeleton and muscle chart; although my theory of mermaid evolution always involved mer-knees, and tendon fusion, this will do nicely

thanks, now i can just enjoy yours and forget about doing one myself

inpresive. i love what u did with the legs. what id sugest thoe is to chang up the head a bit. it would seem that it should point up. if there lower body is tat evalved for water id do some with the uper body as well. i did see u got rid of the external part of the ear and that was good. id thing the sholders would be closer in on the body. all n all i think this is awsome.

Well, a cetacean-like orientation of the muscles would make more sense, since the traditional mermaid swims by flexing its tail in a ventral-dorsal direction rather than sideways.

Very cool! I like the vestigial flippers.
