*eyes widen* oh gosh you're right XD I never realised this I just took the films for granted. It's just Fred and George with letters isn't it? hahaha, wow...

Is it really that big a deal? Not every little detail in the HP fandom needs to be 100% canon. And the Weasley sweaters with the letters on them are just aesthetically pleasing.

It's not that big of a deal, no. I'm not throwing a fit and boycotting all the films or any piece of fan art/fan fiction that makes Ron have an R on his sweater. I'm not saying that the sweaters don't look nice and comfy and stitched with love. They're just sweaters.

Just like this is just an icon. It's not a huge rant about how everyone who thinks there's an R on his sweater is an idiot, because they're not. It's just an icon. I'm not some canon-nazi or anything. This was made for me, first and foremost, and shared in case anyone else wants to use it.

As well as I can remember (and that may not be very well as I haven't read the books recently, although reading them all [except for the seventh, which kind of sucked in comparison] ten times since I was six kind of excuses that), other than the first book, there isn't anything to imply that Ron doesn't have a letter on his sweater.

Even if he doesn't have one in the books, it would make sense if he did. Molly's a busy woman, and using just one pattern for all the kids probably saved her some time. It could also be an aesthetic choice, showing how close the Weaslys are.

True, true, but I still don't think Ron's sweater has an R on it. XD There's only one moment in the entire book series that implies he doesn't have an R, but there are no moments that imply that he does. (And, like you, I'm going on memory here. I could be wrong!)

Also, it would actually take Molly more time to make her children have sweaters with the first letter of their names on it. She would have to make individual patterns for nearly every one of her children, since only Ginny and George share the first letter of their names.

It really bugs me when people do this! Get it through you thick head people! Only Fred and George have letters on them!

Um...*raises hand slightly* What if, perhaps, it's not that Ron doesn't have an R on his sweater...But that Harry doesn't have an H?
I know that whenever I read/listen to that part, I imagine George has turned his attention away from Ron and both twins are focusing on Harry again...

Yeah, that could be it. But I always assumed they were talking to Ron, though, because he was the last one speaking. Who knows. XD

You know, that's one of the first [OMGWTF THE FILM MAKERS ARE STUPID] mistakes that I never noticed. Perhaps they should read the books more carefully...
-sigh-

Mhmm. I know small details like this shouldn't matter to me, but they do. XP Because I'm just THAT crazy.

I know! It's Fred and George who do, so people can tell them apart! It's not hard to tell which one Ron is...

Yeah, I know! D:

So many people seem to think that all the Weasley kids have their first initial on their sweaters...

Wow. I knew that but....I guess I never really realized it when I looked at fanart.

It doesn't really matter, though. Fanart will still be awesome.

Uhm, I think they do....

Because I've started drawing fanart before the films came out, and in my mind's eye the Weasley Jumpers always had a large letter relating to its owner in their breasts. I actually remember being "disappointed" that the R on Ron's Christmas Jumper in the Philosopher's Stone film was so small and... fuggly.

But then again: Tealin's artwork might have planted that idea in my brain, because there is an early drawing of Fred and George on her old webpage that shows them wearing blue jumpers with golden G and F on them.

I'm... very confused now. I'll go check. Not for teh sake of proving you wrong, but because I'd always pictured the Weasley-Jumpers like that, and definately pre-film. Meeee...

Maybe I should go get a life, instead?

Nah, they don't. XD If you're American and have the paperback version (though I'm pretty sure you're not, since you called it Philosopher's Stone), it's on page 202 when Harry is opening his Christmas present with Ron.

The twins come in and the following dialog is exchanged:
"Merry Christmas!"
"Hey, look - Harry's got a Weasley sweater, too!"
Fred and George were wearing blue sweaters, one with a large yellow F on it, the other a G.
"Harry's is better than ours, though," said Fred, holding up Harry's sweater. "She obviously makes more of an effort if you're not family."
"Why aren't you wearing yours, Ron?" George demanded. "Come on, get it on, they're lovely and warm."
"I hate maroon," Ron moaned halfheartedly as he pulled it over his head.
"You haven't got a letter on yours," George observed. "I suppose she thinks you don't forget your name. But we're not stupid - we know we're called Gred and Forge."

It's only George and Fred's sweaters that have a letter on them, so that Molly won't confuse them. ^-^

It's a small detail, but I'm lame because I always want to go, 'They don't have Rs on them...' But still, I enjoy good Harry Potter fanart (especially Marta of Art Dungeon if you've seen her work) whether or not the Weasleys have letters on their sweaters or not. ^-^

So, yeah. It really doesn't matter. I'm just lame. XD

NinnyTreetops In reply to Enchantedd [2008-06-06 19:24:29 +0000 UTC]

In the British version, Percy has a P pn his, too.
Though Gred and Forge do suggest that it might be for "Prefect" (Or "Pompous Prick"? )

I've checked myself yesterday, but didn't want to come back and pester you with it. But I guess we're both lame

Wow, Ron's jumpers don't have R's on them... Consider my mind blown XD

Yay for lame people!

And you said jumper! *is happy* That makes you automatically awesome. I know it's rather shallow, but it always makes me smile to see people on the internet who say 'biscuits' when I would say 'cookies', etc, etc. ^-^
