According to legend, when the knife of the guillotine cut off the head of the rebellious André Chénier, a female figure appeared on the scaffold. She curled up her long hair and laid the severed head in it as in a cradle. Kissing Andre on the forehead, she whispered, "Sleep well, the poet, your muse will keep your memory". In 1887, the sculptor Denis Puech decided to perpetuate the memory of André Chénier, who over time came to be considered one of the great French poets of the late 18th century. The legend became the basis for his statue, presented to the Parisian public at the Salon in 1888.
