Description
Icarus was right on the verge of falling asleep when Baste picked him up. He almost wanted to be asked to be carried back, but he knew he was a little too big for that now. Chances are she was just about as tired at he was. Even in his drowsy state though, he couldn’t help but notice the excitement she was radiating. He considered not saying anything, but he did want to indulge his curiosity. His head slowly tilted to look up at her as they walked along.
“…I take it class went particularly well?”
His ears laid back as she looked at him, eyes wide and grin momentarily disrupted by surprise. The grin flashed back within an instant though.
“It went as good as always, but something really good did happen. I noticed you kept reading about earth magic, so I asked a nice ‘gro to teach you about it and they said yes.”
Baste halted as Icarus came to a stop, his gaze wide and intense as he stared at her. Any previous drowsiness seemed to have been cast out the window with the statement. His stare was blank for a long moment before his mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for breath.
“I- I- I lack words. I don’t,” he looked away, raising a paw to run through his fur, “I don’t understand. You do so much for me as is.”
“Well, of course! I want to see you both healthy and happy.”
“…Happy,” he repeated the word slowly, as though it were foreign. His gaze flickered to the ground, his face scrunched in thought. “I… don’t know how I am too thank you for all you’ve been willing to do for me.”
“Don’t worry about it. Let’s go ahead and get home since it’s not getting any earlier.”
The wyngling’s head slowly bobbed in a nod as he followed her back.

“I’ll see you in a while, Icarus! As always, try and make friends today.”
Icarus waved his goodbye as Baste took off. He watched for a long moment until he was certain that she was gone before rushing inside. The crayons clattered in their box and paper rustled as he dragged them out and began drawing. He had hardly slept a wink the night before as he had spent much time thinking on what he could do as payment for her hard work. A drawing obviously wouldn’t cover all of it, but he figured it was a start. There was more time later for more gifts.
With great care, he drew all the details he had taken care to remember this morning. Unfortunately, with crayons, he couldn’t fully show off every detail like the color of her claws, but he was no professional artist anyway. Maybe someday, he could get better tools for such delicate work. Even with better tools though, it would still take him ages.
Fortunately, he managed to get the picture done before Baste would pick him up. It obviously wasn’t a masterpiece, but it seemed like his best drawing yet. He set his crayons away and looked over the drawing one last time to make sure everything was right before tucking it away in his book. He could hardly wait to give it to her later. Preferably back at the house so that nothing would happen to it as they walked. It would be difficult to keep his mind off of it until then. His gaze kept flicking to any clocks he passed, hoping that the time would seem to jump forward. All he had to do was wait.

It's about time that kiddo did something nice for Baste with how kind and patient she has been.
I did also want to add more to this particular picture, but it took 5 different tries before even this came out in a way I liked. So I tried making up for it in a bit of a longer story than I normally do.
Here's the full drawing as it probably would be a little difficult to see in the picture.
