ART CRITICISM
The piece mentioned in this article, Puppet by Enero is symbolic, darkroom photography. In this work of art, (the first in a series of marionette-themed photographs), a hand is placed limply at the center of the image. Each finger is attached to two strings that keep the digits suspended in midair, as well as supporting the attached, slightly bent, arm. The lighting is predominately illuminating the right side of the hand, leaving the left side fading into oblivion just as the marionette strings do. The image size is thirty seven and seven tenths kilobytes and the date of publication is June 16, 2003. The subject of the photograph has medium length, refined, filed, fingernails, as well as slender, feminine fingers.
The formation of the fingers and the arm creates a dipping βuβ effect. The fingers lower in steps from the pinky to the middle finger and then rise back up to the original level at the thumb. The shape created is a shape of frozen movement: a wave-like arrangement in a still-life piece. The same shape is applied to the sinking down from the wrist to the inner elbow and then back up to the upper arm. The two similar shapes combined create an abstract pattern of rising and falling, just like that of the body movement of a performing marionette. It creates a limp, puppet-like movement, in a still piece. The photographerβs ability to capture this is fantastically perceptive.
The way that the arm is bent, as if it has a lack of room for full extension, implies that the puppeteer is somewhere behind this hand. The strings that disappear into nothingness, could they possibly be controlled by the subjectβs other hand? Is she in fact her own puppeteer? Is she going to find that she has control of herself? Or is the puppeteer something less visual and more conceptual like a possessive or controlling dynamic with a loved one, a restraining government, a powerful god, a strong influence, or even the unwritten rules of society. The strings could be holding her back, or they could be guiding her. The artist leaves the answer to the question, βwho holds the strings?β to our imaginations. The best artist is one who leaves a feast of thought, mystery, and wonder for the viewerβs eye, and Enero has done just that. On top of that, creative lighting accentuates the raw concept, drama, and emotion to such an extreme extent.
This piece is fantastically arranged, lit, and thought out. On top of that, the concept is strong and powerful, but leaves enough to the imagination that the viewer can create their own meaning for it. The idea of restraint and/or guidance is applicable to everyone and anyone, creating a unity between the viewers of this piece. The composition, and the raw simplicity is beautiful and powerful. I am personally a huge fan of this piece and I believe it deserves much appreciation.

Puppeteer of leaves, never leave, my season.
My reason for continuous, consecutive breaths. With your strings I’m tied, captive within your truths, my lies lie. Sway the plants – ever whistling – sway me listening. My season of escape, lay light your smiling blade, on me. Gaping stitchless, tearless eyes. Gazing amazed. Gaping eyeless bloodless wounds.
Flawless flowing Castrati choir, embraced my sound. Engulfing me, hungry speaking shadows, by string...for whom?
Four strings, for it, for me, for you. Fourth snaps. Forth charge, my puppet, my leaf, my scar.
