Description The Kaiju Portraits was a little side project that, while not as important as my upcoming comic works, is something I plan to keep at until the day I die. Basically they're anime-style portraits of giant monsters and related characters from all over the map of fiction. Instead of featuring all of them one at a time by completion order, I think it be way more eye catching to do these as multi-character compilations for DeviantArt instead:

Mara: Kaiju Portrait #30:

Addition number 30 to the Kaiju Portraits is also my first Doctor Who based character, while also being my second snake themed monster. Ironically though, Mara is technically not a snake at all, but a formless evil artificially created long ago on the planet Manussa. But Mara was driven out from its birth world and found refuge on the world of Deva Loka, home of the peaceful Kinda people. As seen in episode 119 "Kinda", when the 5th Doctor (Peter Davison) and his bus-load of companions at the time visited Deva Loka, one of them, Tegan Jovanka, became possessed by the Mara, and along with another victim, a Kinda named Aris, attempted to stir up conflict on the otherwise calm world.

The Doctor was able to save Tegan and Aris by forcing the Mara out of them with multiple mirrors, as he knew that the Mara was so evil that it couldn't even handle its OWN reflection. Although defeated, Mara returned in episode 125 "Snakedance", this time returning to Manussa and once again taking over poor Tegan's mind, along with a young Manussan named Lon. Obtaining the ancient Great Crystal, Mara was able to create a physical form that of the gigantic snake rendered above, but met a supposedly final end when the 5th Doctor, using a smaller version of the Great Crystal and his own alien will, broke Mara's hold on its victims and destroying its serpent form.

Although I'm happy with the way this picture came out, my references for Mara was very limited, as neither "Kinda" or "Snakedance" are available on DVD (long out-of prints videos no true help either), and the internet was surprisingly lacking on this character as far as images go. The only reliable reference was Wikipedia, though knowing my luck, I'll get a better look at Mara and may have to do this portrait all over again! Damn you Mara, you evil fiend, damn you!

Rhiahn: Kaiju Portrait #31:

31 is a good number, even if your subject for the 31st addition to the Kaiju Portraits is one of the wackiest monsters ever to show up in Godzilla's already wacky Rogues Gallery! And of course, we have the House of Ideas to firmly place the blame upon!

Rhiahn is from Marvel Comic's 1970s Godzilla series, and was the (unofficial) leader of the Mega Monsters, a bizarre but powerful trio of cybernetic beasts sent by the Megan aliens to conquer Earth by destroying all opposing obsequies, such as Godzilla, the giant robot Red Ronin, and the brave men and women of the clandestine SHIELD organization. Rhiahn had three tails that not only spun like helicopter blades for flight, but could also slice through anything and anyone unlucky enough to get in there way. And wither it be his natural smile or subtle character detail, Rhiahn was the most tenacious of the three Mega Monsters when it came to battle, as he had the most contact with Godzilla himself.

But despite an additional power boost from his Megan masters and with it increased size, Rhiahn, and his cohorts Triax and Krollar, were ultimately defeated by our heroes. Although to Rhiahn's credit as a credible (yet still very silly) threat, he managed to end Red Ronin's run in the Godzilla comic book series. Victory may be for the robot however, as Red Ronin has returned many times since in the Marvel universe, while Rhiahn and his team still remain one-shot obscurities.

Nice work on both monsters Enshohma, what are your thoughts on how the DVD release of Kinda includes both a version of the story featuring the original rubber puppet Mara and a version with a CGI Mara?

Out of all the enemies Marvel Godzilla faced Rhiahn was my favorite. Such a bizarre design, I just love the weird ones when it comes to kaiju.

With that said, would you be tackling Rhiahn with your own artistic series?

If any of you enjoy the Mara stories, then you should listen to the Doctor Who Audio Drama ''The Cradle Of The Snake'', in which the Mara makes a THIRD appreance.

Thanks, though Iā€™m a little embarrassed of these older pieces simply because they look the part, as opposed to newer ones like my Cyclops Creature.

Rhiahn is crazy enough to be mistaken for an Ultra Monster!

For some reason in the 1970s, the original monsters made for the American-based Godzilla products were very close, if not right there, with the Japanese sensibilities of monster designs...and is some cases maybe even better, considering how unappealing those Zone Fighter opponents were (we still love you Spider Uros).

The three Mega Monsters were really cool, and a shame they were the last true giant monsters created for Marvel's Godzilla books, not counting Devil Dinosaur, but he was an already establish character by then.

If Rhiahn was an Ultra Monster, he'd be of Commander Black's doing, as that "Ultraman Leo" baddie had so many non-suitmation puppet beasts under his control.

I'm not familiar with Mara - I've got my eye out for the original Dr. Who series - but I applaud your take on Rhiahn. I've always loved that guy. He was utterly ridiculous, but charmingly brutal and dangerous. He had real character, and it's conveyed wonderfully here.

Enshohma In reply to GREGOLE [2008-05-25 05:17:33 +0000 UTC]

Ridiculously cool monsters are always a draw from me, as seen with the other Kaiju Portraits I've done outside the DeviantArt ones. And we're on the same mind set when it comes our reasons behing liking Rhiahn.

Old school Doctor Who is a little tough to swallow compared to the more lively new series, but on its own strength its a great show. If you're desparate to see it, keep me in mind.

I liked Kinda. The special effects snake (basically a massive puppet) must have taken a lot of strength to move...
It was also where I saw Adric for first time.

A comment and slight Doctor Who lesson...giant puppet, who know!

I study special effects. Hoping to go into them (specialising in CGI, but I love modelwork too).

I hope it works out for you, as model work is still in very high demand these, despite what CGI hype may suggest otherwise.
