Description Sterling silver, suede.

Dragonfly (no references, it's probably excessively off but the long body gets you the impression) prototype featured-catch necklace. The suede joins the two wings, and the pin is inserted into the hinge to hold it closed.

This is a prototype, so please excuse the toolmarks and bent bits. I also apologise for the dreadful photos! I'll improve on them when I have access to some daylight at the weekend.

I'm really excessively pleased with this piece. The parts fit together so snugly and accurately, the design functions better than I had hoped, and it looks gorgeous both when worn and when not. (The wings can close completely with the front surface outside, or to around 30 degrees with it inside, so that you can suspend it from the cord as if in flight.)

The suede is quite short, so that it sits just below the base of the throat and fits with a range of clothes. I think I may replace it with ribbon for durability, though.

I'm going to try and make several this weekend, along with some other pieces. My intention is to check the time required for each price, so that I can work out a reasonable price. If you're interested in buying one, please drop me a message or note, and I'll get back to you with a price.

Oh, and if you've left me a message and I haven't replied, I'm really sorry but I've only got 'net access in my lunchbreaks! I'll do my best to go through them all soon

Oh yes, and if anyone has any suggestions for simple embellishments to the pin without sacrificing the simplicity, please pitch in!

Great work! I love the design and functionality of it. Also looks like it has a nice weight.

Thanks The later versions - which I really should photograph - are, I think, even nicer!

This is lovely. As far as the pin goes, what about making the head bigger? More insect like, even if it's just two silver balls for the eyes?

thanks! The current versions have a cabochon set on the top of the pin, looks quite cool though it doesn't show up when you're wearing it!

its nice and simple with an interesting locking mechanism, intriguing and so classy

beautiful work, especially for a prototype piece! must also be a pricey project if you're making test pieces from sterling silver.. are you planning on using the same for the real deal?

in terms of simple embellishments, if you're any good at hand engraving maybe you could carve some really basic, light dragonfly-esque patterns into the wings.. otherwise i quite like it plain like this

Thank you! I really hope to develop the idea further as my skills improve - either emphasising or concealing the mechanical nature of it...

Thankyou! I'm working on improvements to the design, hopefully more dragonflies will come together quickly after my current mega-project's out of the way

So glad you like it! I'd be delighted - I want to refine the design and execution a little first, but they should be ready for sale within the month (dayjob permitting). Would it be OK if I sent you a note when I'm taking orders? I'll post on my journal when I've got my sales catalogue together.

So glad you like it! I'll be making a few more and they'll definitely be for sale - I'll be putting up more details when I've worked out a price for them, and I'm putting together a catalogue of various pieces - if you're interested I can let you know when it's ready

Great design! I really like the simplicity of this piece.... I think the smooth surface is lovely. I personally would either give it a smooth satin finish or engrave a pattern on the entire piece... maybe try one of each

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

entanglement In reply to jessa1155 [2008-02-08 16:58:31 +0000 UTC]

It's a dreadful photo I'm afraid - the surface is very rough with toolmarks etc. I'm going to make another few shortly, and I'll be sure to try different textures - engraving is a good idea. Thank you!

It's a great design with a ton of potential for variations.... you could use the same concept for a clasp or even a fancy fastener for a jacket I look forward to seeing what you do with it!

Thanks! Those are really cool ideas - the original one was for the closure on a woven silver choker, but I did think that it would make a great catch on fabric. It would need a safety chain though... So much fun!

I really like this design - simple and elegant!

As for things you could do to the pin - you could cut some grooves into the lower end to make it kind of look like their segmented tails maybe?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

entanglement In reply to aglaranna [2008-02-08 17:00:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Yes, I was thinking of that - I guess that if they're sufficiently geometric and regular they'd go with the pattern formed by the hinge...

*can't wait to make more*
