looks great, the textures are really good it almost look like you could touch it, i always have trouble doing a descent looking pony without any line art. I have trouble to take into account the atmosphere effect, and ambient occlusion correctly, got any advice?

Thanks!
Ambient Occlusion is not a part of my workflow, so I'm afraid I don't really have anything useful to offer on that subject.
Personally, most of what I know comes from a mix of academic study of how things looks and works in reality as well as artistic studies of photos and paintings. In short, I have built a sizable mental library by reading a good deal and looking at a good deal of things. It helps to have a reference folder as well.
That said, I think it helps to have a goal (or a set of it, depending on how ambitious you want to be) for you to achieve with a painting. From there, look up materials that are relevant to those goals and go to town with it when you start painting. The most important thing for me though, is spend time on it.
