Something a little bit different for me!! Another XC entry for an Instagram show with Miss Audrie <3 This time with her new owner Valentine Peces!
I was inspired by Tank Girl comic strips after buying Jamie Hewlett’s art book to try it out myself. It was my first time doing something like this and it was quite fun!!
Story (558 words)
A sigh leaves Vallie’s body, hands slipping off her hips as the red roan mare smoothly transitions into a walk in front of her. Audrie’s head towered over Vallie, air blowing out of her nose and the light chewing of the bit filling the silence around them. Ally’s grip around her reins softened as she hopped off the mare, sliding the reins over the mare’s neck and down in front of the red haired girl.
“She’s all yours” The brunette said with a smile. Her face shone with sweat and her chest rose quickly and deeply.
Hesitantly, she took the reins, and watched the mare stretch her neck, looking around at the busy environment of the cross country course they settled on the side of. Who knew Valentine’s trip to Norway with her new barn friends would end up with a mare in her hands. Ally patted the mare’s neck, giving Valentine another smirk, and walked away, gloves and helmet coming off in the process. The mare’s speckled coat shone with sweat, but her eyes remained bright, speculating with the idea of going another round on the course.
Vallie’s round wouldn’t happen for another 2 hours; her first cross country course on this mare, especially a mare with such personality and drive. It was a lengthier, more galloping-through-fields course than the challenging jumps and tricky maneuvers. Vallie had her experience in cross country, but all her previous steeds had been well-behaved geldings who knew exactly what they were doing. Now, with a red-headed mare with the power to completely abandon Vallie and do her own thing, Vallie’s confidence sank, and her anxiety began to rise. That awful, gut-stirring anxiety.

“Here, I’ll help you.” Ally left her seat on the yard chairs, taking the mare’s reins as Vallie positioned herself on the side of the horse. Ally secured the reins in the fold of her arm, cupping her hands as the bottom of a boot meets them. She helps Vallie climb herself up the horse. Audrie side steps quickly as Vallie’s seat reaches the saddle, raising her head and tail flicking. Her ears pin back slightly, teeth chewing the bit slightly aggressively. Vallie gathers her reins quickly, hand meeting the side of the mare’s neck.
Ally lets go of the reins. “I just don’t know how you willingly buy a mare. You are brave as fuck.” She folds her arms, smiling at the girl in front of her.
Vallie shrugs, letting out a chuckle. Ally admired the hell out of her for deciding to ride the mare through a cross country course, the only knowledge of her from her previous round. “I wish you luck, girl” Ally pats the mare on the shoulder and Vallie nods, unsure what to say. It seemed like her speech had been eaten up by the nervousness that inhabitated her. Vallie’s turn would start soon, and she nudged Audrie lightly, urging her to a walk and turning her around in the direction of the starting gate. Her walk felt quick under Vallie’s seat, with long, thoughtful steps. Audrie’s hair flipped side to side with every step she took, head still high up in the air and a determination in her body. This will be my horse, no matter how this round ends up, Vallie thought to herself, a love filling up her heart.
