Description (Welcome to 2008! )

I don't usually do canon ElfQuest characters -- but, this was an entry for the 2008 ElfQuest FanArt Calendar, organized at the Scroll of Colors forum on the official ElfQuest site. The theme of that year's calendar, to celebrate EQ's 30th anniversary, was "favorite moments". This piece was chosen for July.

(As soon as I can figure out how to post a link to the official calendar, I will. ElfQuest redid its website recently, and not everything is back up, including the older fan calendars. For now, let's try this -- all of the other art from this calendar can be seen here, at the ElfQuest Fan Art site: [link] )

I wound up picking this moment because I'd decided I wanted to do something with Bearclaw. I was also trying to avoid better-known moments that I thought others would be picking. And, I was struggling with the idea of trying to do "my own" version of something that was already firmly in my head as done by Wendy Pini (how can you compete with that?).

This moment comes from a short story called "Courage, By Any Other Name", about how Redlance got his name (prior to that, he was Redmark). The art wasn't by WP, but by Debbie Hayes and Paul Abrams. (It's appeared, in b&w and various color versions, as a bonus in a bunch of publications, though it originally appeared in "Warp Graphics Annual #1" in 1986). This climactic scene has been drawn officially three times, then -- once by Hayes/Abrams, once by (will have to fill this in later), and once as a small panel by WP. I was still able to pick an angle that nobody else had done.

Let me just say for a moment how much I now detest strangleweed! There's things about this piece I'm dissatisfied with; there's also mistakes. I'm very pleased that it was chosen despite those things.

Pen and ink, Copic markers, and some after-effects in Photoshop.

Update: wow, what a terrible background composition! >_< That tree is *terrible*, and does it have to be just STUCK there in dead center?
