Description One of my two entries for this year's ElfQuest Fan Art Calendar; the "Day" version was chosen for July (see the previous entry in my gallery).

The entirety of the calendar can be seen here ([link] ), which also has desktop versions available; and it can be purchased in print form here ([link] ), with all proceeds going to WolfPark. I should mention that folks who see this and are interested in the concept of the fan calendar, and who might like to participate in the future, should check out the forums at the first link.

The theme for this year was "Hidden Moments", and the title here is "His First Wolf-Friend" (with the tagline/description "Nightrunner was a pup once? No way!"). We were supposed to choose a moment that was hinted at somewhere in the comics, but that was never actually shown. Nightrunner was a vivid wolf character from the Original Quest, but we never did get to see the moment of him and Cutter bonding, so there you go. The other characters here, witnessing the moment, from left to right: Brownberry, Nightfall, Longbranch, Skywise, Joyleaf, Bearclaw and Blackfell.

After I had done the basic "day-time" lighting version, at the suggestion of a friend, I tried to do this "night-time" version. I was pleased with the results -- I sort of felt like I mentally cracked the "problem" of night-lighting, although I have a good bit of practice to do before I really "get" it. This being the first piece I tried it on, it's not entirely successful. I offered both versions to the calendar judges, for them to choose which one they liked better (or, I don't know, fit the calendar better), and they went with the day-time version, which is fine. Doing this version, I was fighting against my own preferences for all the detail to be visible, which it certainly is in the day-time version (even if the lighting in that version is more "boring"). But I'm kind of fond of this one as well.

Black Prismacolor pencil linework, Copic marker coloring, effects in Photoshop.

Cutter's pale hair acts like a warm spotlight here! I really like the subdued nighttime effect - I think it makes it look more -cozy-. I really love the characters you chose to feature. I've always been such a fan of that 'generation' of the holt.

Me too, obviously. I wish we could have more stories about those earlier generations, that weren't overshadowed with dark angst and Huge Drama. Of course, one can't really wish for that, because it's not like WaRP has an infinite capacity for giving us stories. There are a lot of stuff about those earlier generations I wish we knew; but that's part of their appeal, too.

Wow, this is a great example of how lighting can change a picture completely! It's really great how you used the shadows to create a stronger focus on Cutter and Nightrunner . And I like how Skywise's hair and metal stuff shines ^^.

I had fun experimenting with the night-time technique. Credit for the "spotlight" effect on Cutter -- the concept of it, I mean -- goes to Windrider, actually. After I turned in the first version, there were a few days before the contest closed and she suggested that I accentuate the highlight/shadows of this one so that Cutter would really look picked out in a moonbeam, and become the focus. She was right. I think that the biggest problem with the day-time version is that it doesn't create that focus on Cutter as strongly. (Because I still haven't conceptually cracked the idea of doing a day-lit scene with strong shadows and light.)

I somehow like this version better but I see how the "Day Version catches the eye more." ^^

Thanks! I think that Carol's explanation makes sense -- it's true that, overall, the calendar had a lot of dimly-lit pieces in it already. And it just so happened that I did offer them the choice, so I can see why they decided to go for the more brightly-colored one. I also am not sure how good this would look when printed out. (Whether that would make it even darker, so that it wouldn't look as nice in a calendar hanging on a wall.)

I can understand the choice Just think as a single piece it worked better in the dark colors. I'm glad you uploaded it.

I think I actually prefer the nighttime version.

Man I miss Elfquest. Thank you for bringing back fond memories.

All the Calendar judges liked this one better, too. But we had so many other entries that had subdued coloring that for variety we went with the day time version of this image. In this version, the focus of the image is more clearly on Cutter, where it belongs. I also like how Nightfall really sparkles here.

I any case, Eregyrn, this was an awesome entry, totally in spirit with the theme, and done very much in the classic EQ style. Excellent job!

Thanks, Carol! Once I saw the whole calendar, I kind of thought that might have been why - there WERE a lot of darker pieces this time around, and I imagine this one was unusual in offering the choice of a brighter version.

Well, it makes sense having the subdued colors since that was when all the intimate moments happened. I had stopped keeping in touch with Elfquest ever since the Pini's went their separate ways. I should really get back into it.
