Description "How to make a Cosplay Sword Part 1"

I promised to do that:

A tutorial for making a sword like my master sword or the new red one, "Yug Verund" for my Prince Valdrigue Cosplay.

I know, most of you would have liked to see the tutorial done step by step with pictre of my Master Sword, but I have none. So this will have to do: the pictures of the WIP from "Yug Verund".

Acrylic Board:
I found out, that this stuff is called Forex Foam Bord ... it seems that the people from my craftstore did not know that

This is the first part, the other(s) will follow soon! ^_^

Part 2 Part 3

Hello! this is amazing and I cant wait to make my first cosplay sword ^^

I was wondering tho, how thick should the board be? 1 mm or 2mm?

Thanks!!

Wow good job ! This looks good Do you think it can work with a wood board instead of an acrylic board ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to Diboops [2013-06-16 11:21:59 +0000 UTC]

Of course! It will bee much cheaper, but also havyer... but I thing for a Sword this size it wouldn't make so much differnece...

What size of foam board do you buy for one sword?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Eressea-sama In reply to drawingforsoup [2013-05-13 12:31:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, it depends on what size the Sword should have. For Yug Verund (the red sword in the tutorial) e.g. I bought a pice that was 100cm x 35cm.

Eressea-sama In reply to drawingforsoup [2013-05-13 12:29:57 +0000 UTC]

great tutorial! i've got a question tho.. acrylic is rather heavy and brittle isn't it? and isn't acrylic usually transparent...? From your pictures they seem to be white rather than transparent... i'm just wondering whether the acrylic you used is the same as the one i had in mind ._.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to chirunu [2013-04-12 17:11:25 +0000 UTC]

Well,... acrylic is often used es a easy way to make transparent things not from glas. - But Acrylic is in fact just a synthetic material like plastic... my board is made of acrylic foam. Its not that heavy - but I guess instead of an acrylic board you can also look for a PVC foam bord... I think it works the same, even if the material is different... the product has similar characteristics

chirunu In reply to Eressea-sama [2013-04-14 05:01:06 +0000 UTC]

is this the material you were referring to? [link]

cos what i had in mind was this one: [link]

Eressea-sama In reply to chirunu [2013-04-15 12:28:07 +0000 UTC]

hm... kappa is not the right thing, I guess it would breake very easily...

ok,... I searched teh internet and I didn't think taht this would be so difficult... I'm from Germany though and in my craftstore they told me, the material is called "Acryl Harschaumplatte" - "acrylic foam board" in english. But I could not find this stuff in the web... but now I think I got it!
It is called "forex foam board . I think I'm gonna add this link to my tutorial
I hope this can help!

The-Music-Moustache [2013-02-15 13:58:07 +0000 UTC]

This is a great tutorial! Do you think this method could work for a rapier-type sword, or should I try something else?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to The-Music-Moustache [2013-03-07 09:19:55 +0000 UTC]

I think it would work. - May be you should take a thicker bord, because the thinner the blade, the "wobblier" the sword. - If you know what I mean... - But I could also imagine, that a rapier could be made of a thin wooden stick covered with wonderflex or Worbla's finest art . The onger i think of it, it seems to be the better method of making a sword with a thin blade...

uhm... I never did this one... but I think you can use the same method as shown here... Make a print pattern for the basic form, cut it out from the board, form it in shape. only the handhold hase to be done differently....

I had to make an account so I could say thank you. I am starting my first cosplay project, and I was not sure where to start for my swords. I have made bows out of wood for hunting, so when I saw this little tutorial I became extremely excited. The board looks to behave enough like wood, so with this as a reference I can use my current tools and wood working skills to finish off my project :3

BTW I love you projects. I'll be excited if mine comes out even half as good as yours! Thanks again for the help <3
