I started down the road of SLR's... Years ago I bought a low end Minolta (film)... never was very happy with it - never inspired. too much automatic-ness to it, plus film processing on a budget wasn't good...

then along came digital... been using point-and-shoots since late 2004... on my third camera now but ready to make the jump to digital SLR...

In the meantime, I kept looking at options... maybe the Sony Alpha because of it's compatibility with my lenses. BUT.
but...

reading reviews, looking around, everything points me to Canon... So I up and decided to look on ebay and buy a film one with a decent lens to "play" with... a Canon Rebel 2000 35mm.

I gotta say, I am loving it!!!!! I should have bought a real camera years ago. ~ElevenOrchids has the same camera as you - and the long exposures and macros make it worthwhile...

I've glimpsed the macros with my film - and just ordered lenses that will be compatible with a digital when I do upgrade.. (a 70-300mm Sigma macro/tele and a 50mm Canon).

Anyhow... I can't wait to try water shots with it sometime - but ... I'll stick to Ricketts Glenn with film... I'd love to try these Susquehanna shots, but I'd waste too much film getting it right, so they'll wait till I get a digital version...

(looking now at the Rebel XSI but want to wait for prices to drop a bit more).

all roads lead to canon my friend.

aww dude ya shoulda just went out and bought a cheap digital rebel xt. i dont know how much it costs to keep up with film... but it will eventually lead up to the cost of a cheap dig rebel. either way tho its cool that ya bought a canon. they are what most professionals use. granted nikon aint bad. sounds like you are having loads of fun with it!!!

ahh but the susquehanna shots are easy!!! and we are right here by it!! this water weeds shot was surprisinly easy. just a 30 second exposure on a piece of rock, moving water, and some weeds. with the naked eye i could see that the sunset on the water was casting great colors around. as long as you get your exposure right it will probably turn out to be a good shot man. you should go for it!!

also i am surprised you dont have any river landscapes during sunset! i wish to god i had taken em when i had but i remember driving down 147 and seeing wonderful wide angle landscape opportunities of the susquehanna valley.

I looked hard at the xt ... it was almost $400 body only or closer to $500 w/ kit lens at Dell recently...

Then I looked at the xti and xsi and their options... Now that i've been playing with my film rebel, I am getting used to the viewfinder - but in terms of digital point and shoots, those are horrible, so I have been spoiled by live-view... which is something the xsi introduces...

also at 12.2 MP it'll last longer (tech-wise) than the xt... so my thoughts were to head that direction but to wait for prices to fall a bit more... and for now, invest in lenses that will work on either (EF not EF-S)...

in retrospect, I should have ordered the XT while it was a bargain because now they're starting to disappear on Dell's site, at least (I go there because I have an account with them)... but it's okay, i'll bide my time till I can better afford the newer model.

this is true. yea the XTi is the latest and greatest incarnation of the rebel. might as well go with something that has 1/4 more pixels if you are gonna spend the money.

well, if money were no object I'd buy the several thousand dollar 16 or 17 megapixel pro version. but why? in two years it'll be obsolete, too... might as well save the money and get something more reasonable.

then you should buy the Rebel XT. its getting cheaper and cheaper. it does the job at 8MP. nice entry level. from there the next real jump is a digital slr that actually has a full frame sensor. like a EOS-1Ds. an old one. can find em on ebay for like $1500 to $4000. its only 11 MP but its full frame!

tho i think that the rebel xt is just fine for a body, the real stuff is the lens and other accessories. mostly the lens.

I withdraw the last comment. I decided it was too great a deal to pass up... but it must have been an error in their system - when I went to check out the description and price had changed to the $939 price.. (the instant $350 savings disappeared)

i can get em for $835. body only for $735. if you are ever interested lemme know. Our distributor offers em as well as computer components.

I'll watch... short on cash. I could have done the Dell deal because I have a credit account there... not that I need more of that but a 40D for $579 would have been too good to pass up.

The EOS 40D is down to around 1100 on Dell..

Yikes! I just looked and found this (half the price of a month ago at $579):

Canon
EOS 40D Black 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only/No Lens Included) - MSRP $1299.99
Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
Manufacturer Part# 1901B004
Dell Part# A1269406
Resolution: 10.1 Megapixel
Type: LCD display - TFT active matrix - 3" - color Starting Price $929.99
Instant Savings $350.00
Subtotal $579.99

With a 28-135mm lens it's $939 (seems like a huge price jump).

They just price dropped the xti (10.1MP) to 439.99 / 519.99 (first body only second 18-55 EF-S lens).

but the 10.1
