Kinda reminds me of one scene in the movie 'The Longest Day'.Β  It was the night the Allied airborne troops were dropping in all over Normandy.Β  The situation was a patrol of German troops were walking along a stone wall, looking up at some flares and aircraft overhead.Β  At the same time a squad of American paratroopers were on the other side of the wall, and heading in the opposite direction.Β  And they too were watching the flares above them as well.
The two groups walked passed each other without noticing.Β  Except for one American bringing up the rear of his group.Β  After the two patrols had gone by each other, the young paratrooper just realized what had just happened.Β  He stops to see the Germans disappear into the darkness.Β  And when he turns back to tell his compatriots, they too were vanishing into the darkness.Β  He's caught in a dilemma about telling his friends without letting the Germans know they were there too.Β
In the end he just gives up on the whole deal and follows after his buddies.Β

Well, you can't shoot someone who's clearly not a threat to your well-being. Be glad that supply girl isn't armed.

In that case, the supply-carrying lady is seemingly unarmed.

But in action, you don't wait for an unthreatening enemy to become a threat.

Makes me think that Carlos Hatchcock, the USMC sniper in Vietnam, never shot an unarmed enemy. Except just once.

Well, shooting the supply girl now would be a bit unsporting. She can't fight unless she attacks the American with a soup ladle (and that would be pretty stupid).

As for Carlos Hathcock, he shot someone who was trying to retrieve his weapon (which had been literally shot out of the latter's hands). That someone-else was NOT willingly disarmed, therefore he got NO legal protection from getting sniped.

True. Although, if miss Supply had a pistol or had a slung rifle or, generally speaking, was packing heat, I would consider the possibility of shooting first.

Fair enough. I didn't know about that additional information about Mr Hathcock's only kill of an undarmed enemy.

I think I remember the VC he killed was, as far as he could tell, a paymaster officer.

Why not just take supply girl prisoner before she gets the pistol out? If the Yankee had a friend, the two of them could easily grab the supply girl before she'd even have the chance to wield her soup ladle. A point-blank encounter like the one shown is hardly going to allow the person with a holstered weapon to get ready for an unexpected fight. You can't serve soup with a Walther P.38 in your good hand!

Reminds me of North Africa, sometimes the British and Germans would encounter each other well looking for water, seeing no reason to fight, they'd chat a bit and be off.

Another one i'll be looking at for days

Isn't it funny how stuff like that would work out? Here you are, fighting some foreign enemy on the front lines, and then eventually coming across them but not doing anything about it because you both are too tired to fight. Strange how that works, eh?
