Description Media: Pyrography/woodburning Tool: Walnut Hollow Versi-tool. Burn temp 950 F. Wood: Basswood

Subject: This is a large plaque, approx 14"X20" of the Norse God Odin and one of his two wolves, Freki. The knot animals at the top of the art are Scandinavian coming from a Viking art style called mammen era. This is the artwork that was brought with the vikings to the UK where in time it influences Celtic artwork and Celtic knot work. The ancient Scandinavians believed that evil spirits were drawn into the knots, but then became lost and could never escape again. Adding knot motifs was a way to protect the viewer and bring them better fortunes. So I incorporated them into the plaque. The axe is a Danish bearded axe that was a favorite of many Norse warriors. And the helmet is from a style called Vendal Era which preceded the 350 years of the Viking age. It is characterized by it's long sweeping cheek crests and ornate decorative work.

The time for this burn is 42+ Hours.

Oh wow, this is just fantastic. The hair of both his cloak and the wolf - hair is the bane of my pyrographical existence! You have done a superb job here!

Hej, that's a vikingly great job ! I just love the way it looks ! To me, it's just a masterpiece ! The only regret i would have is that we can't see fully Odin and there isn't Geri, Munin and Hugin... But i just can't really regret that because it's too beautiful ! I need more of it !

An instant favourite. Not only is it my preferred motive of all time, but the expertise and care with which it has been crafted is evident in every strand of fur, grain of wood and edge of metal. An epic motive, and an epic piece, which aside from being visually stunning, bears witness to an almost inhuman level of patience. Thank you for sharing your superb craftsmanship with us here, it is an honour and a rare privilege to behold.

Cheers,
-Martin
