Description Shot at Avila Beach, Central Coast of California

The great blue heron lives in and around salt and freshwater environments. Four subspecies exist in the world and all occur in North America.
How long do they live? Sixty-nine percent of new born great blue herons die in their first year, two of the oldest known have lived 23 years.
How fast can they fly? Two separate studies measured a cruising speed between 19 and 29 miles per hour.
The great blue heron hunts for fish by day as well as by night and employs two methods, "Standing" and "Walking Slowly." When "Standing" it will stand motionless in a shallow pool of water, waiting patiently until a fish comes close enough to pluck from the water. When "Walking Slowly" it carefully treads its way through the water, keeping its neck stretched outward and forward. If it catches a small fish it will immediately swallow it. If the fish is too large the heron will take it onto the shore, kill it first by beating it into the ground, then pick it apart by biting off bits and pieces.

this is such a wonderful shot. i love great blue herons! growing up in FL, i lived on the river at the end of a canal and there was this beautiful, stoic, gigantic great blue... i "named" him 'patience' .... he lived in our backyard for years hunting and sunning himself from our deck or boat until one day, just before i went off to college, he never reappeared. i have such an affinity for these birds.

Thank you for the fav on "Soar"
Even your first shot is pretty good and I like your Black-crowned Night-Heron. I don't think we have those in my area.
I mostly do waterfall shots, but I am also an opportunist...meaning I'll take a picture of just about anything if it looks good to me. Here's my top two fav'd shots:

Interesting bio. Not to mention a woderful picture. This one caught me right away in my thumbnails while looking around. Love the center of focus and it provides just enough motion that it doesn't disturb the whole pic's mood. Not to mention of course, I love herons and cranes. Beautiful capture. Keep it up.
