This is the only tutorial I've found that comes even remotely close to what I'm looking for. But of course when I try it it looks awful. Plus the lasso tool on SAI is so sensitive that I can't make any proper shapes. Not to mention not understanding brush settings.

Great tutorial. I've always wanted to try shading this way, even though I mostly cel-shade my work. This gives me some approaches to think about.

Thank you very much for this tutorial. By the way, is there any trick or tips on choosing skin color pallete?
Btw, how did you make soft shading brush on pencil tab? I'm using CLIP too but I didn't find that one.

That's a good question. Duplicate Lighter Pencil so it creates a new tool. Decrease hardness all the way. Increase brush density. Turn off pen pressure by clicking the little button to the right of density. Name it fluffy or whatever. As to your other question, I can't really help with color palettes. I'm colorblind, so I just guess what they should be

Try it. Sometimes at first when you try this technique it looks crappy, and you say "why, God!?", but then if you keep going in the end it looks alright.

Wow, I find your technique of shading within selections so interesting

I suppose there are many different ways you could do it.

And my goodness, that really is too hot for DA

OMG that got funnier as it went lol. I got a good laugh out of this and learned something! Never really thought about shadows not multiplying, makes total sense though. I'm just oblivious to things that makes sense . Oh and also it was quite helpful to think about not using pen pressure on size! I always go back and just use the blend tool in CSP but this looks like it might have the result I'm after in the first try! Good to know! Thanks for the tutorial!

erotibot In reply to tsaileehua [2015-01-30 15:26:00 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes I use the blend tool. But it's only to fix small mistakes or smooth out areas that I already painted on. I don't use it to make my gradations or soft edges. Good luck!
